Happy Birthday SurfGuitar101

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 30 Oct 2002 17:46:55

I just noticed this group is now 1 year old.
I'm still not quite sure what I was thinking by starting this group, after
all there was Cowabunga and Reverborama. But gear talk and tab talk got
flamed once or twice on Cowabunga so I decided to give it a go as an
experiment. Now we have 202 members as of today. Granted only less than 10
people seem to post (and its seems like its mostly me sometimes...sorry...),
but still it has been very enjoyable. Thanks everyone!
Keep the reverb coming, I say.

Happy Birthday!
Thanks, Brian - this has been a great resource for me and I hope that
SurfGuitar101 keeps on going . . . .
I'll take another splash of reverb . . . .

Congratulations Brian,
It's been great to find out about "Surf Guitar 101"
As a kind of a newby to instro surf music this group made a huge
difference for me.
I would like to thank everyone who responded on all my questions
regarding gear and playing surf music, I couldn't have done it without
you!
It has ben really nice "talking" to guitar players like Dano from the
Nebulas, Victor from "The Coffin Daggers", Roland from "Bettes surf
pages" and other great surf axe players. Most guitar players never get
the chance to talk to players with that kind of expierience.
I have learned more about surf guitar in the last 4 months than I could
ever achive without this group!
So thank you Brain for this group, and ofcourse thanks to everyone who's
on it!
Happy Birthday!!
Jerry S. from Belgium "(Sovtek victim) of The Ohmmen"
P.S. Any chance on an update of the "Man or Astroman" page? ;-)

congratulations Brian!!!
at our last (uhhh, our only) gig (sofar) we playd a surf version of
happy birthday 'cause it was our bassplayers'. I'm 'double-humming'it
for you again right now. ;-)
even if not all the time everyone is posting, it still is a great
group, lots of fun and very educational, and it deserves its place
next to reverborama. and non-posters are not necessarily non-readers.
so thanx to brian, and thanx to everyone in the group.

If I keep reading this surfguiar 101 stuff, I'll wind up selling all of my
drumsets and getting a Showman & an original Jag (no wife also means I get
the tank immediately). Then the Nebulas will be 3 guitars, bass and a drum
machine - at least the stage tempo will remain consistent with the CD.
Its still very interesting to read & now I know to stay away from Jensen
speakers for my cabinet.
This group is definiteley improving the sound of surf for the 21st century -
keep at it.

Thanks for asking...it has gone a long time without an update. Do you have a
song in mind? I'm currently working on "The Defector" by The Space Cossacks,
but after that...?
MoAM? seem to be on hiatus right now and I'm not terribly thrilled about
their latest direction anyway. I see that Star Crunch (or the artist
formerly known as Star Crunch) has done the theme song for the Jimmy Neutron
TV show on Nickelodeon. Thats pretty cool considering Nick also shows Sponge
Bob, which has music from The Woodies, Los Meltones and the Blue Hawaiians.

Hi Brian,
Well, me and the band play a few covers from MOAM (mostly inspired by
your MOAM sit and tabs)
I want to play "Electrostatic brain" for a while I figured most of it
out, but not the bridge.
I'm also not to thrilled with their new(er) releases. I saw the live in
'98 and the were awesome, they did tour Belgium a few times after that,
but never got the opportunity to catch them again.
There are a few other songs I'm very interested in like their
"Goldfinger" version, which is in my opinion a very good fast cover.
I figured out the rythem guitar so far, but not the lead.
Another real blaster is "Planet of the apes" by the Space Cossacks. This
is one of my favorites together with Rhino Chaser from the Nebulas.
And I wish someone would do some bass tabs for the MOAM songs as well. I
did "Transmission from Venus" together with our bass player and I would
be willing to post it ofcourse. We also did their Ventures cover "War of
the satelites".
Thanks anyway for everything...I just love Surf 101,
Jerry

Hey,
Since joining SG101, I've been able to get directions to websites for the
surf tab I want (BN even worked out Pacifica for me), find out about bands
well worth listening to, and I like to read the show reviews. Even got a
reply from (I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy), Phil Dirt to one of my
questions. For a surf music fan in the middle of the U.S., it doesn't get any
better than this. Thanks..
