Black Eyed Peas "Pump It" can be previewed for free on
MySpace:
Basically a remix/mash/brag-rap of DDs Miserlou with a
touch of originality at the end...some initial impressions?
read on:
1. drum machine generated handclaps recreate the DD "surf
beat"...
2. DDs "hup-hup-ho" is kindof featured as a clever hook...
3. The mighty DD trumpet solo is also "hookified"
4. Cool use of Byzantine scale in the chorus vocals...
Overall, a decent dance/rap/car driving tune...
what's trhe tune about? nothing too heavy..."Turn up your
radio, shake your ass,...be cool pimp daddy dancer"...what
else do you expect from 21st century brag-rap???
Overall, "Pump It" owes a greater debt to George Clinton
and Parlaiment/Funkadelic than to DD...this tune is a
totally blatant Parlaiment/Funkadelic/Clinton ripoff...DD
simply provides the background music for the conceit...
I can see why DD likes the tune though.

That's a totally hilarious misobservation... The song is a teeny tip
of the hat to Parliament, but a total, complete DD ripoff.
LMFAO... jeez (tears in my eyes that was so funny)
well...maybe I DID get that one backwards...but, I guess I
heard more Parlaiment/Funkadelic/Clinton in the vocal vibe
and mix details...and the construction of "da' groove"...
but, in the end it's all the same...
the point being that the tune is a double-rip-off...with
only a touch of originality and really no substance...
my 2 centavos,
:) dp

Just listened to "Pump It". Didn't do much for me. It was kinda like
Hip Hop Kareoke with a pretty much unaltered "Misirlou" providing the
backing track. I remeber the first time I heard Puff Daddy doing his
thing over Bowie's "Let's Dance" & the Police's "Every Breath You
Take", I was surprised that there was very little done to the backing
track. To me, the creativity in sample based music is experimenting
with the original source. I guess if the song was already a hit (like
Bowie, the Police & and now Dick Dale) people will buy it a second
time. There's no risk involved. There seems to be a very real lack of
creativity/originality in the Top 40.
Oh well, maybe people will buy more surf music...
Mike
Exactly. I finally decided to take a listen. I gave it no more than 15
seconds before I shut it down. I figured that at least the tune may draw
more attention to surf music.

Same here. I finally took it on the chin and listened. The only artistic
value I heard, within the 15 seconds I could barely stand, was the members
puking into the mic.

Ok... that I'll buy. And, well, OK, it is a little more than just a
simple tip of the hat to that old school funk. Absolutely a double
ripoff, with only a splash of originality and all the intellectual
depth of a street puddle. The tag vocals at the end are sorta cool
though...
