We just played a gig with a local MC here in Halifax last weekend.
The surf and hip-hop mixed REALLY well. It was great to work with a
really open minded rapper (Jesse Dangerously). mOST OF IT WAS
IMPROVISED BUT WE DID STICK IN "sHOT IN THE dARK", "Misirlou", and a
couple of other tunes in there. It was the first concert in
our "That'll Never Work" series. Both the hip hop fans and the surf
fans really dug it.
We played with another MC, Buck 65, a couple of years ago on 3 or 4
tunes. The hi-light was Buck 65 taking the breaks in "Wipe Out" on
the turn tables. Brought the house down. Wish we recorded that
show! Buck 65 is now signed to Warner Bros/V2 and touring with Moby.
If the Black Eyed Peas wanna use "Misirlou" that's OK with me (haven't
heard the tune yet).

sounds like we might be heading towards an interesting trend? I wish you had
recorded also, sounds like it was pretty cool!

In the early eighties (82-84) there were some credible
surf rap releases, most notably the Surf MC's and
Thermo, both from the Bay Area. When the Surf MC's, a
strictly studio spoject, garnered enough interest to
go on the road, Thermo was hired to become them.
-DP,
