All the reviews were great and I don't think I can add any more. Brian
pretty much detailed most of my activities, but all I can do is echo his
opinion that those were two of the best shows I've ever seen.... ever! You
can read the reviews, but the point is, if you weren't there, you really
missed out. Knowing what I know now, I would regret not seeing that for the
rest of my life. Plain and simple, there is not a band out there that can
come close to duplicating that wall of sound. They raised the bar on this
type of music during their heyday in the 90s, but these two shows seemed to
remind everyone exactly where that bar is, and in my opinion, there is no
one even close - especially with Bobby back on 3rd guitar.
I think the Portland show transcended the instrumental surf genre - this was
not a surf show - this was a homecoming performance by some local legends
that reached mammoth proportions - and most of these fans just wanted to
have a good time and packed this place. Most of these people did not come
out because they like surf music - these folks like the Pilgrims and what
they've come to represent in that area. We can talk about it as a surf show
on our lists, but it goes way beyond that - this was a grassroots fanbase
coming back to life for a rare performance.
To respond to Neal's inquiry -this is not a "tour" - these were a couple of
one off shows to promote the CD. I believe their touring days are long gone
due to family and work commitments, as well as geographical barriers - this
is all documented on their myspace page (most of it under the blog section).
Hopefully, the response will convince them to record something in the future
and maybe do a show or two to promote it. Besides, I don't know where you
can buy white Levi's anymore and Ted made a bloody mess of his
To Ran's em re Devil's Punchbowl, which is also one of my faves (and was
written on the setlist), they did not play it in Portland either (they
worked off the same 2-page list, but did change out some songs for others).
I asked Dave and John (separately) before the show & they said they played
it at soundcheck & would probably attempt it during the set. During one of
the encores, I did point it out on the list to Scott who did bring it up for
an impromtu band vote, but they played Surf Lyre (also one of my favorites).
I am in no way disappointed - with a catalog as extensive as theres, its
impossible to play everything, and if you take into account what they did
play - pretty much everything else I would have requested (with the full
five piece lineup) anyway, I will just paraphrase my opening statement & say
that it was a life changing experience. Although they probably would not
have made it out alive without doing Shit Sandwich judging by the crowd's
incessant demands for it.
The lesson here is a 90 minute of mostly original, all instrumental music
set with a wall of sound with 299 fans (including many fine ladies dancing)
in a sold out club - no vocals, and more importantly, no Miserlou, no
Pipeline, no Moto. Satan's Pilgrims have created their own classics!

got the button somwhere they gave away! is there any plan on them coming to
ny on this tour ? it sounds like they really got amazing better these last 8
years or so, and i thought they were already one of the better surf bands
back then.
