Okay.
I thought about posting a message that consisted of 10,000 lines of
HOLY SHIT, because I simply do not have the words. Easily one of the
best shows I have EVER seen. These guys were on FIRE, pummeling us
with a wall of 3 guitar sound. They had a two page setlist and they
damn near played it all, but the venue ran out of time. They played
from 12:30 till almost 2:00 am. Very little chit-chat, they only
stopped to ask each other what key the song was in (hey it's been 5
years since they played together) and to change a broken guitar strap
(!).
The front of the stage was lined up with SG101 members, I am proud to
say. My wife Shari, me, Ran, Dick, TFJ, Dano, Frodo, and Eric H (Surf
in Seattle?).
The evening was summed up for me when at one point I looked to my
left and caught Dano's eye. He just looked at me, nodding his head up
and down, with a big grin on his face, and we were both saying to
ourselves "O-H-H-H Y-E-A-H".
Fantastic song after fantastic song, all high energy, the house was
packed and everyone was SCREAMING and dancing like maniacs! It was
insane! So many killer songs, I don't know where to even begin. We
took a photo of the setlist, so we will post that later. I just
remember being stunned as they opened with Vampiro, then Plymouth
Rock, and then Que Honda before even taking a breath. WOW!!! They
ended with an insane version of the Lively Ones Tranquilizer. I can't
even begin to describe the songs in between. Just awesome SP song one
after the other....
They even brought their organ with the humongous leslie rotating
speaker cabinet!!! The cab was the size of a small refrigerator that
glowed with tubes!
We had some camera issues which we will correct tonight (some of the
pics are somewhat grainy), but we took lots of photos and video
clips. Some teaser pics have been uploaded to the Photo section on
the Yahoo group site in the folder "Satan's Pilgrims 2005".
Got to boogie on down to Portland shortly....
Special thanks to Ran, Dick, 3 of the Nebulas (who are a f'in riot to
hang out with), and Eric H (so glad to finally meet you).
Much more later!

Oh yeah, I hate this about Yahoo, but when you are looking at the
pics, click the "Full Size" link on each one (top right) if you want
something bigger than a matchbook cover.
Enjoy!

I can't make it tonight. I am disappointed I can't meet with all of you.

Hey Brian,
Just so you know, the "full-size" pic is only viewable to the person
who uploads the pics into the photo section. It's one of those stupid
quirks with Yahoo. If you put them in the files section, they won't
get resized. Great shots nonetheless!
You might try www.flickr.com I have never tried it, but I hear that it is a
popular way of storing/sharing pics online.

get there!
Oh man...what a weekend.
I'll start by quoting a neutral, non biased person that never heard Satan's
Pilgrims before - Elicia, my friend from Tiki Central, that Brian mentioned.
This is what she wrote there:
"...we were at Funhouse when it opened (9 pm)
listened to two opening bands that sucked.
then the SATAN'S PILGRIMS...
holygods what a fantastic group. such energy. they played a 90 min set that
blew my flip-flops off! hell, if i didnt have to work on saturday, i'd drive
to portland to see them play again!! "
Both her and her husband were totally blown away.
For me, I was trying not to have a stupid grin on my face the whole time. It
was by far the best surf show I have seen so far. Totally worth the travel
and having to play the Casbah after only 3 hours of sleep. I told my
bandmates that if there was ONE show I had to choose in order to make them
understand what a surf band should look like, sound like and act like, THIS
was the one.
I'm sure the Portland one rocked even more, but at least I got to experience
the Seattle one.
When I saw the set list I was excited to notice Devil's Punchbowl (one of my
favorite songs) was there, even though a few weeks ago when I e-mailed Ted
with a request that they play it, he said they probably won't. Alas, becasue
of time constraints it was not meant to be. Did they play it in Oregon?
Other highlights of the surf music side of my visit (hey, Tiki Central is
the place to write about the tiki establishments and home bars/lounges that
I visited...) were running into Brain, Shari, Dick and TFJ at the EMP,
talking them into jamming together (only to find out there's a reason why we
all use super heavy strings...), and then getting to chat a little with Ted
and Scott Pilgrim, meeting Eric H, and then Dano & Frodo. The SG101 front
row was awsome. I was glad we all got to cram in there. Too bad the venue
staff had to throw everyone out so we didn't get to thank the Pilgrims for
their show (and to nag them to sign the CDs and posters).
Anyhow, gotta go now, hoping to be able to see the Pilgrims more in the near
future (and see more of our SG101 members around So-Cal).
