Miserlou lives yet again ("Pump It" by The Black Eyed Peas)

red_thundr - 04 Jun 2005 00:15:22

I just heard this... and well, not sure exactly what to think.
Ah well, at least another generation is latching on. No worse than
The Sugarhill Gang's version of "Apache".

Hmmm...I've heard clips of it before and knew they used miserlou...but
after hearing that long clip I can't believe that they actually ripped
off practically the whole thing. It's just them rapping over it with
clapping. The lyrics are horrible too:
"N*ggas wanna hate on us (who)
N*ggas can be eerin' us (who)
And I know why they hatin' on us (why)
Cause that's so fabulous (what)
I'ma be real on us (c'mon)
Nobody got nuttin' on us (no)
Girls be all on us, from London back down to the US (s, s)
We rockin' it (contagious), monkey business (outrageous)
Just confess, your girl admits that we the sh*t
F-R-E-S-H (fresh)
D-E-F, that's right we def (rock)
We definite B-E-P, we rappin' it
So, turn it up (turn it up)
C'mon baby, just
Pump it (louder)"
and here's the story behind the song:
(Monkey Business was literally produced and recorded during The Black
Eyed Peas everlasting road trip. "I was in Brazil doing some CD
shopping," will.i.am recalls. "I came across this compilation and I
thought it was one thing but it turned out to be something else. The
Dick Dale song 'Miserlou,' was on it. At first I was angry – this
isn't what I wanted to buy," he laughs. "But then, really, that song
is hot. I said, 'we should do a song like this.' I jump-started the
computer and made some beats on the train. Then we had to fly to Tokyo
and I tightened up the beat on the plane. Then I recorded vocals in
this park in Tokyo. And that's how we recorded the song, 'Pump It.'")
I don't know what was going through Dick Dale's mind when he arranged
miserlou, but I doubt his motive was to make a self glorificating song
filled with racial slurs and what seems to be a mini-Spelling Bee.

next time someone asks if one of your bands does vocals, you can
always play this..

I could like this amalgamation of surf guitar and hip hop (or whatever you call
it) if they had the talent and creativity to write their own stuff. I'm not
impressed by theft, though. Anyone can do that.

Boy, they buried Dick's playing deep in the mix. Too bad. Can you see him
getting the
same pump out of this that Aerosmith got out of 'Walk This Way' when Run-DMC
remixed
that one? I can see it now - Dick Dale touring with the Black Eyed Peas, making
music
videos with scantily clad go-go girls; rolling in a big white limo; stadium
tours. Dick in
ghetto-fabulous leather rappin' 'Peppermint Man' and 'King of the Surf Guitar',
trading
lines with Will-I-Am?
Ummmm...
Nah.
