I'll throw another one in since we were on the topic of missing
chords, though i'll probably get flamed for bringing mr moto, oh well.
I've seen three or four bands play mr moto live over the last year
and ALL OF THEM left out the great 'guitar solo' in the middle part,
and they played boring root note bass instead of the very going
walking bass....
Man that anyoyed me. And then, realizing that i have very little 1st
wave stuff and should get more, i bought , a.o., the belairs comp
with the PJ booklet in it (origins of surf music? dunno, it's
downstairs) and it has the original mr. moto on it. I was absolutly
shocked to find that that guitar and bass part were not on it!
and now comes the weird part. I don't have a clue what the F I am
playing - I KNOW I got it from a recorded version that SHOULD be on a
cd I have somewhere, but i cant find it.
the only thing i can think of is that it was on a cd called 'surf's
up!' It was lying around in my car (trunk, where the changer was) ,
when i had a 'minor incident' with a leaking (or rather: open) can of
motoroil can it ruined all the cd sleeves, and i know I kept the cd's
but i don't have a clue where they are and what was on it
So, anyone can identify that version of mr. moto? walking bass,
guitar solo-like thing in the middle (A-)part?
WR
Sounds to me that you're thinking of the Lively Ones' version of "Mr.
Moto" which has a walking bassline and is included on the "Surf's
Up!" comp you mentioned.

...it does sound like you are refering to The Lively One's
version nof Mr. Moto...
...I could be wrong, but I think that I read somewhere that
the original Belair's version was recorded with NO BASS at
all...

Absolutely Correct! In the 2-LP Belairs record set, Paul Johnson himself stated
that for the band's entire history they had NO bass. In his words, "back then,
in the South Bay, Bass players were as rare as hen's teeth."
Their pianist mainly filled in the bass parts.
