I am a newbie to the world of surf guitar.
Can you guys recommend some particular artists to listen to? I've got

Mermen, Los StraitJackets,Slacktone,Blue Hawaiians, Aqua Velvets are my
current fav's. Your're right there is plenty of surf music out there. Would
suggest Link Wray as well as Dick Dale for surf roots.

Hi Bob,
TFJ incidently forgot one of the best in his "new surf bands" list.
The Nebulas is a must!
Also, is saw two dutch bands in the list, you also might wanna check
out "the treble spankers", don't know how well they're known in
states? (I'm just trying to promote my little country)
There's also a lot of great belgian surf bands, if you can find
something by the O'hara's, thats lots of fun too.

Wow - TooFastJim pretty much nailed it for me too.
Here's some more ideas/additional amplification:
Old School:
Get the Bear Family records Astronauts CD that has "Surfin' With" and
"Competition Coupe" on the same disc. They had a unique sound - 3 guitars
with tons of reverb.
Lively Ones - Get the "Hang Five" best of. Lots of great stuff there.
Original Surfaris - Get the "Bombora" disc from Sundazed.
The Fender IV - Hard to find but worth it.
2nd Wave:
Jon & The Nightriders - Anything is good, I am especially partial to "Raw &
Alive '98" for a kick ass live set.
3rd Wave stuff: I'm with Jim all the way here. If you get any of his
suggestions you'll be smilin'. He's also too modest to throw in his own band
"The Nebulas"...you must own their CD too if you like fast aggressive surf.
Also check out The Bambi Molesters from Croatia. Really awesome stuff.
Standouts here include The Space Cossacks, Slacktone, and Satan's Pilgrims.
For an instro tour-de-force (not completely surf), check out Laika & The
Cosmonauts "Laika Sex Machine" live CD. Great movie soundtracks, moody
instros, hyped up frenetic surf stylin's.
Another 90's band I've been really digging lately is the The Treblemakers
from Canada. I've got both their CD's "Flippin' the Bird With.." and "... vs
The Doomsday Device". Really great stuff. Zak, are you still out there? Are
you guys going to do anything again?
Also both discs from the Volcanos are in regular rotation in my car.
If you like Euro-instro music from the 60's, don't forget the Shadows. I
recommend "The Shadow's are Go!" best of compilation. And The Atlantics, a
60's Australian instro group, also heavily influenced by the Shadows. And I
too second the Link Wray and Treblespankers suggestions.
Here are some really cool places to pick up some great modern suf music: Mr. Wood has a fine selection of
stuff Ferenc from Pollo Del
Mar/Mach IV's cool online store.
If you randomly pick out some CD's from the above two places you won't
regret it.
Good luck!

If we're getting album specific, you can't forget about the Astronauts
"Rarities" CD (also on Bear Family) - featuring Surf Softly, The Pier, Surf
Party, Hot Doggin, Quasimoto and more.
The Shadows and The Atlantics are also highly recommended, although neither
are "surf," but great 60s guitar instrumental nonetheless & no collection
would be complete without.
3rd Wave - I do apologize for not including The Bambi Molesters - that was
an oversight on my part. Also The Treblemakers - Canada's contribution to
the west coast go sound - are also a worthy addition to any surf collection.
And I am too modest to include The Nebulas in that list - only because I
couldn't be objective in recommending it since I'm on it. I also don't take
compliments well, either - I just play fast and have a good time - if other
people enjoy it, all the better. But if you like alot of the things already
listed, you'll probably like The Nebulas too because our sound is just an
amalgam of many things on that list that we listen to all the time - and
that's the closest thing to a plug that you'll get from me.
enjoy surf

I echo many of Jim's recommendations, and also agree that the Nebulas
are a "must" of the new bands out there.
My personal favorite traditional surf band that hasn't yet made the
list is The Revels, and their cd "Intoxica" on Sundazed is a true
classic.
I didn't notice anyone mention The Red Elvises, probably because
they're hard to pidgeonhole as "surf" but are a pretty good band to
get you into the general ideas of the surf genre.
Two 3rd wave bands I've really gotten into are Surf Report and 9th
Wave - both quality bands and good people to boot. Let's also not
forget Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, who gained notoriety as the
band from "Kids in the Hall".
Other people have mentioned, but I want to reinforce, the two bands I
would consider most "essential". Those are Los Straitjackets and The
Blue Hawaiians. These two bands were a big part of the reason I got
into surf in the first place. I'm not saying they're necessarily
better than anyone else mentioned, they just have a major
significance to me.
One last name to drop is Davie Allan and the Arrows. Once again, not
necessarily a surf band, but some top-notch instrumental rock.
Glad to hear surf is still gaining new converts.
-Surfband Bill
www.thelavarats.com
The Revels were more of a pre-surf, instrumental booze-rock combo (started
in 1957, officially named The Revels in '58 per the liner notes of the
Sundazed CD), but certainly worthy of mention and yet another "must have"
for instro-enthusiasts - also the original composers of "Church Key" - and
I think that's real drinking going on at the beginning of "Intoxica" - not
just a sound effect! And how can you overlook "Comanche?" - you can't.
Long live instrumental booze-rock!
...and thanks for flattering The Nebulas!!

-Most everything listed by everybody else is quite good. But I want
to add a few others to the list
The Dynotones "self titled" and "Super Six" on Double Crown records
The Insect Surfers "Reverb Sun" and Deat Valley Coastline" and new
one soon.
Huntington Cads "Go Exotic" more shadows meets exotica than surf
The Bitch Boys "In Heat" from Slovania Europe
Pollo Del Mar "The Ocean Is Not For Cowards" and " Devil In The Deep-
Blue Sea"

Uhh...sorry man, I have been spending very little time on the
computer these days, I apologize for being MIA for so long.
To answer your question the Treblemakers are finished.
Dead.
Muerte.
Caput.
No more.
No longer exist.
Paul, Robert & Richard have a garage band called the Kakamasotos (yes
it sounds Japanese but actually means "shit your pants" in I-talian)
and I guess it's kind of a Ventures-meet-the-Ramones thing heavy on
the Farfisa.
They don't play very often or have any recordings yet.
I have a rockabilly band called The Alley Dukes that has been playing
a whole lot and should be recording soon. We played with Sun Records
rockabilly legend Billy Lee Riley two weeks ago, had a blast. Lots of
photos in my Yahoo Photo folders - photos.yahoo.com/bighollowtwang
Hate to tell ya but I don't even own Fender guitars anymore.
I have given up on solidbody guitars entirely.
Sold 'em all and bought Gretsch hollowbodies and an Echoplex and a
Space Echo instead.
My reverb tank is gathering dust LOL.
Sorry!
