Re: Order 66 & [new] strings?

I'm just glad to know *something* good came out of that star drek. But I
drift [towards the dark side?]
I'm a still-wet-behind-the-ears surf-playin newbie, and I've come across
something that I wanted to ask about: Why flatwound strings? Is it to
make slides easier? I was of the belief that flatwounds tend to make a
guitar generally warmer than roundwounds, which seems backwards to me.
So, can any of you Lords of the Surf enlighten this poor padawan?

It is a little backwards. If you have the roundwounds then it is a
little too bright sounds. Flatwounds balance it out. I also find that
flatwounds feel better when I play them. When I say it feels better I
mean when I double pick or play rhythm the string stays in place
better and doesn't stretch. Of course this is probably due to not
using very heavy roundwounds in the past, .11s. I do use the same
gauge in flatwounds.

I'm a flat-wound fan as well but in performance situations where I switch to a
2nd guitar with round wounds for a few songs, I often get comments from audience
members who tell me that the second guitar sounded much better. Of course that's
the brightness of the round wounds coming through. So for a while I'm gonna go
with round wounds. The pendulum swings on these issues such as strings and
guitars (Strat or Jazzmaster)

Since "Apache" is among the covers we play regularly, I use only round-wond
striings because ya just can't do the "Nokie" string-scrapes on flats!

I wouldn't use flatwounds. The only thing they're good for is that muted
spy-tone sound. If you want to rock, use roundwounds. Besides, roundwounds sound
just as good muted. The only reason I can think that someone would choose
flatwounds is because they want to be period perfect with their gear.

Talk about string-scrapes, I like to play "He Never Came Back" and if I have
flat wounds, I have to hope that the bass player has rounds or we ain't gonna
get the sound.
