surf rider-missing chord

mom_surfing - 28 May 2005 05:47:04

ok, we're stuck on two chords in surf rider and a search has been no
help whatsoever as who ever tabbed the song left out the last two
chords in the bridge where it goes A7 D7 ? ? the last of which i think
is an E.........i rarely use tab mostly because i've found that when i
figure a song out note by note it's easier to remember, but on this
i'm stuck.....carol

No. Actually it's a E Major with a augmented 3rd with a flattenend 5th. ;D
I think Marty is right. I think there is that passive C Major thrown in there.
Dang music teachers!

A7 / / / D7 / / / G7 / / / A7 / Bdim E7b5
The Bdim played in 7th position with a B in the bass on the 6th
string, the E7b5 has the Bb in the bass on the 6th string. I can't
hear a "C" chord in there anywhere. Casey

Nice one Marty! Some people say you can hear the "C" by putting a conch shell
to your ear!
Surf Rider Bridge:
A7 A7 D7 D7 G7 G7 C E (E7 OPTIONAL)
That's how I have the changes noted down in my old practice book from the early
1970's. Would someone explain why The Ventures would have chosen this ONE
original to throw in a diminished chord in any key? (and neither did The Lively
Ones in their arrangement!)

I don't c it either, I hear just plain A - D - G - E. On the lively
ones version on the pulp fiction cd, to be precise. A C-chord would
be a bit weird there cause it has a b in the melody on that riff, so
that would make it sound major7-y, which it doesn't. unless of course
I figured the b out wrong ;-)
all that dim stuff sounds to me like some lame piano book dude that
throws the chords and the melody together and then combines them to
the guitar chords above the music lines - happens all the time,
you'll see simple pop bands playing a F#dim13no3thAb or whatever. I
former guitar student of mine even had a Nirvana book that had Kurt
Cobain play an Em7add4 ... figuring that one out was quite a laugh

Ah...I've often wondered how those piano fake books come up with their
guitar chords. Often the chords are not even in the same key as the
recordings.

The Lively Ones go to the E early and skip the C that the Ventures put in when
they wrote the tune. The b note is just part of the pentatonic lick that the
Lively Ones play over the E chord. The Ventures also have that b note as a
passing note over the C on the way to the E chord.

Hi Brian,
i dont really know HOW (or even ewhy) they do it - but it's usually
either to complex chords that try to capture everything the two
pianohands do in one chord, or you'll get a chord box that always gives
the 0-position fingering - again making it not sound like it was
supposed to. Big frustration for me when i started playing guitar at 14
or so. real guitar books were scarse and very expensive (pre-internet
era), so i got the 'for piano and guitar' books from the library.
Probably, that is what prompted me to learn how to figure out songs by
ear.
figured out the Em7add4 yet?

What's the big deal with these "dim stuff" chords? I have a few fake books and
it's very elementary to play the tune in the "chord melody" style. All you do is
make the melody note the first treble note of the guitar chord. You can play any
song in the world this way. As far as Em7add4 goes, you can play it in the first
position with 2 fingers. I'm speculating that this is how Kurt wrote and played
it.

Hi Brian,
i dont really know HOW (or even ewhy) they do it - but it's usually
either to complex chords that try to capture everything the two
pianohands do in one chord, or you'll get a chord box that always gives
the 0-position fingering - again making it not sound like it was
supposed to.
