The High Voltage Sounds of The Reluctant Aquanauts

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 26 May 2005 19:08:18

Just want to give a shout out to Bill. This is kind of awkward giving
a "review" to a list member, especially coming from me (a no talent
wanna-be), so I'll keep it short. I am really digging your CD and I
think your band shows tremendous promise.
It is trad sounding to a T, all the way from the music to the artwork
to the very choice covers of High Voltage (Jim Messina & The Jesters),
Scratch (Eddie & The Showmen), and Everybody Up (Fender IV). The
original songs fall very nicely in the spectrum set by your cover
choices. Some of the songs don't do anything for me, but you do have
some really good ones. I think Chrome Czars is excellent. It's my
favorite track. I like the song writing, the playing, and the moods
and energy of that one. I also really like The Deputy's Empty Gun, The
Saint's Wake, The Kook (nice fast picking here), and Buddy & Julius.
Your drummer is very good, I love those fast fills he does on High
Voltage. He adds a lot of energy to the CD.
I really think you guys are on to something if you stick with it. I
would be very proud of this if this was my first surf CD effort. I've
heard you mention on this list a few times that you are trying to get
a rhythm guitar player. How is that going? I am biased because I
really like rhythm guitar in surf, but I think that will really kick
you guys into high gear.
Personally, I don't get the sweaters or your band's name, but hey, you
got it where it counts and I wish you guys a lot of success and fun in
your efforts. So don't change any of that stuff on my account, keep
doing what you guys believe in.

Brian, thanks for the kind words. Funny, everyone likes Chrome
Czars....we threw it together in the studio as filler. All the ones
we thought we're good most people disliked, so go figure.
No more rhythm guitarists, both guys we tried couldnt keep up. It
came to me having to teach them EVERYTHING and that would be a
nightmare in the long run. Our bassist is moving to Arizona, he
writes half the songs and co-founded the band with me, so we'll
probably go through a big change. We've got a new bassist, which
I'm pretty excited about, he's jazz trained like our drummer, so
it's been kinda fun for me to stumble around on guitar with these
two really good musicians. If we do another album we'll probably
cheat and double track guitars, and add horns/keyboards to
everything and go for something completly different than the last
effort. We just recorded something for a Cordeilia comp we're going
to be on, and it sounds a lot different than the stuff on the
album.
With the "High Voltage Sounds" we just recorded it all to tape and
in one room, I guess we tried to capture our live sound.
As for the sweaters, we just thought they'd match our vintage
instruments, and traditional sound/look we are trying to achieve.
The name is a play on the Don Knott's movie the Reluctant
Astronaut. There are a few Don Knott's refrences in the CD.
Deputy's Empty Gun when slowed down is the Barney Fife theme from
the Andy Griffith Show, and the title says it all. The whole Buddy
and Julius riff is a song they used to play during the show, "Opie's
Theme" I guess we just like stuff from 1962, "Buddy and Julius"
comes from a movie from the same year. We're just a bunch of
surf/gear geeks it's all for fun, so there's not much to really
get :)

I love this CD as well. I love Saint's Wake so much. The only song I
don't love is Everybody Up!(the rhythm guitar track bothers me) I
think the original is only ok in the first place. All the originals
are great and High Voltage and Scratch are flawless copies of the
source recording.
I get the band's name and love it. And they dress quite well. Good to
know a fellow young band plays it this well and this traditional. Most
of the younger bands "surf" bands have I sound I don't find very
appealing. Here's hoping for another Reluctant Aquanauts release.

Ya Bill, thanks for rotating the songs on your myspace page. I've heard some
great stuff
there lately. Tell us again how we can get a hold of your disc. Is your
version of Dark Eyes
a recent recording? It's not on the disc? Oh, and thanks for clarifying the
Don Knotts
stuff. I had no clue. But if you guys were called the "Regal Beagles", dressed
in leisure
suits, I might of got it.

Hey Bill,
Paypal says that the Yahoo address for payments hasn't been
registered. Do you have a different one to use?

Joe and Shawn,
You can send me()a check or money order
for $10.00, or Paypal $11.00 to
Dark Eyes was done for fun about two weeks ago when we did a
recording for an upcoming Cordelia comp we hope to be on. We ran a
direct line during the recording along with micing the amp with one
vintage mic and one newer mic. One of the guys in the studio said
it sounded like Eddie had a direct line on his recordings, I
insisted, "that's just how a Jaguar sounds with flats." We tried it
anyway... so that's what you're hearing on Dark Eyes. We did Sqaud
Car in this manner also.
