EKO guitars

vinzthefuzz - 26 May 2005 18:04:14

Hello from France!
I need an advice! Do you guys know the EKO guitars, I mean the vintage ones made
in Italy during the sixties? I didn't made up my mind but I found a particular
model I love on the net. It's a gorgeous blue sparkle EKO 700v4. A french
guitar collector tell me their price goes stratospheric since 2002. The model I
saw was a huge (for me...) 1300 USD (plus air S&H for France: another 100
USD...). Apparently two years ago this model didn't go further than 500 or 600
USD. So is this guitar overpriced or not? Thanks for your answer!
Greetings from Nantes!
Vincent

Sounds a little pricey to me...but what do I know? You may want to check with
the guy who
runs the website "MyRareGuitars.com," he deals in EKOs and other weird Italian
and Asian
guitars from that era. Unless he's the guy trying to sell you the guitar!
Bienvenue!

PS...MyRareGuitars.com has a '60s blue sparkle EKO 700 w/ 4 pickups listed for
$1299. Is
this the guitar you are considering?

Vincent,
because you say USD's I am guessing this guitar is coming from he
states ... please note that if you import from the states, you have
to pay import taxes AND V.A.T. on both the price and shipping costs.
If tax and VAT are anything like in the Netherlands, and I guess they
are cause we're both in the EU (remember to vote, it's sunday for you
guys right?) then that is a little over one third of the total sum yo
can add. and yes, for 'secondhand' stuff as well.
Plenty of EKO's in Europe, I'd day this store in
amsterdam has EKOs on a regular basis. Do you check ebay Italy?

Oh yeah, the price, I forgot about that - I am by no means an EKO
expert - but i have never seen one over 400 euros. Maybe because they
are so much mnore available here. Also, from what I have seen over
the years in EKO's, quality and specifications do not seem to be very
consistent, so personally I wouldn't buy one without having seen and
actually played it.
also, the price of a return trip to the states is included in that
guitar - it just seems odd. you don't happen to order your brie from
frenchcheeseUSA.com do you? ;-)

Hello Wannes!
Thanks for your advices. I saw nothing interesting on Ebay Italy and in France
somebody sell this model for 1000 euros... I had a look on the site you
mentioned but no Ekos were available to this day. But you're right here in
France we're in Europe and this is european vintage guitar so it's logicalley
cheaper to buy it there ! But I did not found a decent model of this guitar for
the moment in Europe. Do I have to be more patient?Yes I know about the custom
duties...!
Thanks!

Hi Vincent,
I always click the 'europe region' button on ebay, that way you get
the entire EU. To be honest, germany seems the only really active
ebay site - tho i've come across interesting things from italy and
france too. most countries i guess, like holland, have some other
internet trade system which came first and is therefor 'the place to
go'. which sucks, because they are in the local language. I can read
german and english, and a bit of french, but that's about it.
My experience with the more exclusive and/or exotic stuff is that
every now an then things pop up on ebay, and ther then that you need
the drool kinda stores in big cities. Nantes is pretty big right?
MAstredam/Rotterdam/ The hague stores will travel through the states
very 6 months or so, and just buy a container full of stuff and ship
it over - like the one I sent you, which also seems to have a liking
for uncommon european and japanese guitars. i have to say, they don't
maintain their website very well, and usually have a lot more in the
store - giving them a call would saying what you're looking for might
be worth considering, try the string in Amsterdam and purple guiatrs
in the hague as well. Btw, I am in france quite a lot, and i don't
envy you. I check out guitar stores everywhere I go, and France,
well, supply is low, prices freak me out.
Still, if you definitly want THAT specific model of EKO, it's gone be
hard to find - if you just have some cash to burn and want soemthing
cool and differnet, then way better deals will cross your path.
good luck!
