Warmoth Modified Mustang Bridge

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 24 Oct 2002 18:01:59

I don't know if I agree with their assessment of the stock Jaguar/Jazzmaster
bridge...but here is something that may interest people on this list:

The Mustang Bridge does wonders for a Jazzmaster (IMHO), however, there is
a much better solution than electrical tape to take up some of the slop where
you place it in the guitar. Pick up some shrink tubing that is used to
insulate electrical wire (available at any home improvement center). Cut it
to fit the posts of the bridge, slide it on, and then warm it with a match or
lighter. It will shrink from the heat and make a nice snug fit on the posts.
This will take out a lot of the sloppiness when the bridge is placed in the
guitar. A much neater solution than tape! I have done this on two Jazzmasters
and it works great.

Hey Brian,
I have this bridge. I ordered it to check it out but never got around to
installing it. Looks cool enough, but it has its flaw. Once you set the
saddles where you want them, you then have to remove them by unscrewing, and
cut the screw down, because the steep rake angle causes the tip of the screw
to hit the string. Bets luck has always been with a stock mustang bridge.

Now I could definitely be wrong, and I have been many times in the past,
but as far as I know, there is SUPPOSED to be some forward and backward
movement in the bridge to accomodate for tremolo aktion without scraping the
strings across the saddles, in essence wearing them down and breaking them.
In theory, if you remove that play, then your tremolo aktion will be
compromised, and it wont be as "smooth".

Hi,
I'm with Dano on this. The bridge is supposed to rock in order for the
tremolo to work right. If it didn't rock, the strings would be forced to
scrape on the saddles. A lot of people seem to think the Jazzmaster &
Jaguars were built with heavy strings in mind (since thats all they had back
in the 60's). The heavier strings help keep the bridge stable. If your
bridge is getting wacked out of the normal position, try heavier strings
and/or make sure you have the neck shimmed slightly.
Unless of course you don't use the trem, then by all means lock the bridge
down.
What advantages do you see my wrapping the bridge posts up?
