By all accounts the quality of the new AV

Oh heck yeah. I have a few American Strats, and a Mexi. The Mexi is
definitely more amenable to surf; it's mellower, with more powerful
pickups and a fullness that is very nice for surf. The neck feels a
bit fatter also. For the most part, the fit and finish are pretty
good, except for some chipping of the lacquer on the fretboard.
It's very playable, has great tone, and heck, it was dirt cheap. I
can overlook the small flaws for the price I got it for.
