Hello,
I recently came across a '63 or '64 L-series jazzmaster (sunburst
color) for sale by the original owner. Haven't had a chance to
actually check it out but the he assures me its in very good to
excellent condition. It comes with the original sales ticket, case,
ect. "Vintage Guitar" price guide for 2005 says $2600 - $3,000. Is
this a reasonable price to expect to pay when buying direct from a
private owner? I'm not collector, just looking for something a little
more surf-sounding than my stratocaster, and like the older guitars.
He aslo has the Deluxe Reverb amp that was purchased with the guitar.
Any help would be appreciated. ( To "Mom Surfing" - if I get it you
can check it out when I come to Hatteras) Many Thanks, Casey
I saw a guy parting out a battered and neglected L-Series Jazzmaster on EBay -
totally
trashed and poorly repainted body and moldy electronics ($749); neck badly
stained,
redwood gouged, frets flat, with letters missing from the headstock logo, Kluson
tuners
($1,399), average tremelo bridge ($159); neckplate ($179); pickguard ($289).
Total:
$2775!
Did everyone read that? $179 for the neckplate. The neckplate! $289 for the
pickguard!
Ladies and gentleman, what has this world come to? ;-)

Yeah, but how many bids is he getting for that junk? He may sell the Trem unit
because $159 ain't so bad for an original '63, but the rest?
No Thanks!

It's totally sick how people can part out original
instruments and make more than they would have selling
the instrument as a whole. This happens to a lot of
good instruments that people want unreasonable prices
for. They run it on eBay a few times and the bid
never goes to the sick amount they think they ought to
get for it so they part out a perfectly good
instrument and all the yabo's come out and bid. I've
seen this happen, tragically, to many vintage and
early vintage reissue Fender basses and it makes me
wanna cry.
IMO if you're gonna pop for vintage you'd better play
it first. By all accounts the quality of the new AV
series is much more consistent than the old days.
Let's face it, QC wasn't always what it is now and you
haven't yet heard a story about somebody that thought
they're newer AV was lacking in that area...overpriced
maybe, but certainly not lacking quality.
As far as CIJ vs. AV I think it all depends on what
you decide to settle for and be happy playing. After
owning several American made P-basses, all of which
I've stupidly sold for the extra money, I purchased a
Mexican Precision bass to play in my rock band. My
first impression was that it was a rickety piece of
garbage and made me pine for my old AV Precision (if
anybody sees an ice blue metallic AV Precision bass,
let me know) but once I got it all cleaned up and set
up and ran it through a couple of practices I found
myself having little criticism for it.
