Very cool Dave! I guess this guitar may have a little more "mojo" than
my '03.
For what it's worth, this nut was cut differently than my 2003. So in
away I guess even in this machine-produced world we live in you can
get varying nuts on your Fender guitars! Sad to report this but the
guy who previously had this guitar must have modified the nut and
deepened the A slot. So, thanks to Dave for leaving plenty of space
so I could file the other slots to match it.
I'm a gear dork and these little changes are of interest to me....
The AV line has changed a bit. The '99 has more of a "vintage" guitar
feel, where as the 2003 has more of a "new guitar circa 1962" feel.
Most of the vintage Jags I have played have had a more sleekier vish C
neck, unlike the chunky C on the 2003. I wonder if Fender changed
that to satisfy the Strat guys. My first impression is the chunkier
neck is better for my tastes. Also the neck tint it MUCH darker on the
1999. The 2003's headstock and back of neck coloring looks like a 70's
Strat neck to the '99. The G&G case....this realls suprised me as to I
though all G&G cases were created equally. The 1999 has a lighter
tolex, and the inside is more yellowish, and the placement of the
handle on the case is more centered. So when you carry it there's no
longer side.

When Fender first started making AV Jags and
Jazzmasters, they were set up with flatwound strings.
The nut would have wider slots than the later versions
which are set up with 10 sets. I don't recall the
years all this changed. The factory nut height is
.018-.020" for the plain strings. That's between the
bottum of the string and top of the first fret. And,
.020-.022" for the wound strings. Hope it wasn't me
who screwed it up!

Dave, I got this thing from Ebay ($817 - a steal). I'm pretty sure
the guy who had it didn't take care of it, it's pretty much yellow
now so I doubt it was in a case, so he abused it. I'm willing to
bet he hacked up the a slot. That being said... the nut slots were
cut poorer on this than on my 2003...could this have been done after
a beer break? :)
You said they originally came with the flats on them? It seems like
they targeted these towards the surf guys to begin with. Would you
have any idea if they changed the toolings for back of the neck
profiles? This really makes me think now that with the chunkier
necks and rounds the Jags come with today are designed more for
the "Strat guys who want to try something different." Instead of
the ealier C Vish neck which came with flats... all speculations.

That is a good price, but made well before I bagan
drinking Havana Club rum during my lunch breaks, after
enjoying it for the first time with one of 50 Foot
Combo's dancers.
Since I set up, and play these guitars everyday, I
don't really notice gradual neck shape changes. They
all seem a bit wide to me. Ocasionally, I see an over
sanded neck which apppeals to me more. I'll ask today
if they made a change, but I think you just happened
to get one with a little bit different shape. These
are all hand sanded.
