hi everybody,
NOTE: this turned out be a quite long post, just on speakers. Sorry, i
thought i'd mention it , you might not want to read on ;-)
i have quite a few questions on speakers, i'd appreciate some info
here.
I've finally installed a new speaker in my fender 75, i think i made a
post on it earlier. it was offered to me for a reasonable price, so i
decided to check it out. did it this weekend and it completely blew me
away, i have a different amp now alltogether. In there was a 15"
Celestion, the new speaker is an early 70's 15" high efficiency Altec,
150W, with alnico magnets, reconed in '91. In one word, wow. it is so
fast, so clean, and way louder then the celstion, which gives me the
oppertunity to actually use the low-power switch on the amp, which
gives better sound too. I'm not kidding when i say i feel like i
bought a new amp.
haven't bought (i.e paid ) it yet, sooo...
Does anyone have experience with Altecs? how about reliability?
i heard there is a JBL connection (Altec-Lansing / JBLansing), does
anyone know what the connection actually is?
And finally, most important: i really do want to buy this speaker, i
a/b-ed it with the Celestion and the celestion is now worth nothing to
me. However, the guy that sells it has a pair, and he obviously only
wants to sell them as a pair. which is okay, i could use the other one
, probably for bass. But, and here's what i really want to know, i'd
have to build a cabinet for it. Now, i have the Altec-specs for the
suggested closed-cabinet (they come with the original '70 Altec
booklet, how cool is that?), and it is so big, and i don't even want
to think about dragging it around. (sorry to all you big cabinet fans)
So, my question is, really, this: what's the effect of the closed
cabinet a.o.t. open back or half open back? the speaker sounds fine in
the open back 75, but i noticed that bass-speakers are usually in
closed back cabinets, so should i stich to the closed-back for bass?
i noticed to that some speaker cabinets have glass-wool or something
on the inside, is this to make the sides absorb more power and to make
a smaller cabinet possible?
If I choose a closed-back, should i stick with the suggested cabinet
or is it okay to experiment a little and try a smaller one?
if someone knows about this, i'd appreciate your input! The guy
selling them knows a lot about audio gear, but not about musical
instruments, thats why i post these questions here. The speakers -
origanally PA speakers - where in two cabinets he bought just for the
cabinets, and replaced the speakers. he uses them on his stereo. (Yep,
PA cabinets for his stereo)
