In the last few days that I've really started hitting
the reverb hard again I've noticed something
unsettling...like, no reverb. The reverb on my
Vibrosonic used to sometimes cut in and out, but only
after I'd let the amp sit dormant for a while. Well,
I would fire the amp up every day while I was on
guitar hiatus to keep that from happening but I guess
it didn't work. When I turn the reverb knob up and
down the hum rises and falls, but there's pretty much
no reverb. Anybody got any ideas?

Richard,
I can tell you what happened to my 66 Super Reverb. For a year or
2 the reverb would come and go; sometimes playing a loud chord would
bring it back. It also seemed that once it was working it would
continue if played regularly. As time went on it cut out more and
more. Anyway, I toook the reverb unit apart and discovered that one of
the very small wires that connected the signal from the spring to the
output had come loose. Couldn't figure out how to reconnect it
properly and ended up just buying a replacement, which works fine.
It might be worth to take a look inside. Casey

There's only about three things that can go wrong, and they're all
pretty easy to fix (even a knucklehead like me has fixed all three).
Do the obvious stuff first, like sticking a new tube in the reverb
driver and swapping out the cables connecting the pan. Next, as Casey
mentioned, check the wires on the inside of the pan that connect to the
jacks (if it hums, this is likely the problem). Next, if you have a
voltmeter, check those tiny transformers inside the pan on each end.
These are actually replaceable if bad, but seems lots easier just to
replace the whole tank, unless it's a vintage unit that you want to
keep intact. Worst case scenario is that it's the small transformer on
the chassis. Had to replace one in a Vibrolux Reverb recently---cost
about $30 and was no big deal to do (and I ain't no amp tech). Good
luck.
More reverb, Matt Q.
Play heavy metal ?

LOL! Yes, that's it!
I'll check all those things out, thanks guys. I've
never done much poking around on the inside of an amp
(at all) so this is gonna be a pretty new experience.
I guess I can't break anything without trying...

Yup. I know exactly what's wrong. It's made by Fender. It's shit.
Nah man, I'm just kidding. Sounds like the thingy in the hoozywhatzee isn't
making contact. Is that a Custom Shop Vibrasonic? Mid-90's? Blackface?
You should be using an outboard reverb tank anyway. This is God sending you
hints...
And for those who don't know:
DO NOT USE BOTH YOUR ONBOARD REVERB -=AND=- YOUR OUTBOARD REVERB AT THE SAME
TIME. YOUR DRIP WILL TURN INTO MUD. TURN OFF YOUR ONBOARD.
That is all.

It's a Silverface. After finding out about the Custom
Shop Vibrasonic and seeing the money they went for I
seriously thought about trading my Vibro in for the CS
Vibrasonic, but I was told by people on the FDP amp
forum not to so I didn't.
My first thought was to actually finally go for a tank
but the problem is that I want a black tank, which
seem kind of hard to come by. There aren't any up on
eBay that aren't crazy vintage. You can't buy them
new on MF anymore either, which sucks. I also thought
about just getting a Digitech pedal.

You could buy a re-issue brown tank on e-bay, then go over to Vibro
World www.vibroworld.com and get a new cabinet for it in any color you
want. sometimes they have black cabinets sorta cheap.. Their cabs
are good quality too.

Richard,
Like this sweet little '64?
She's 41 years old(still looks 18). Measurments 10" x 19" x 7½",
and weighs 16 lbs. Likes long walks on the beach, she likes cabernet
sauvignon, and has been known to loss herself after a glass or
two.
Her brush with fame was having Leo wink at her on his way out of
Fender.
I've become increasingly fond of the Guyatone reverb tanks after
simultaneously being exposed to two of them at very close range over the
last few weeks. They are full sounding, powerful, wet and most important of
all - consistent. Not sure where to get them or how much they cost, but
they seem to be solidly built and they do come in black!

Musician's Friend sells the Guyatone 3000 tube reverb for $449 - about $50 more
than a
Fender '63 Reissue. Have not seen them any cheaper, anywhere else.

The Guyatone tanks are pretty cool - not only do they come in black, but
they come with NOS tubes, too! I heard the Nebulas play through them a few
weeks ago - nice n' wet!

Oh yeah... just goes to prove that vintage doesn't always equal
better. Gonna have to try that Guyatone now! I'm hip to anything
that sounds good.
If I only had more time, I'd love to study the circuits and vastly
improve them. Back then, there was little concept of audiophile
sound: the engineers were using old technology and their analysis
tools were only their ears. It'd be great to sit down with my buddy
(an MSEE), and just improve the tone circuits for greater control,
"warmth", and far less noise. While there will always be naysayers
whose minds are locked into the "vintage" trap, I think there is
plenty of room for improvement and refinement. The original designers
set up a decent enough standard, but it's high time to pass on the
torch and take it to the next level.

cheap 'n easy
