Sleigh Ride Surf Guitar Arrangement

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 25 Nov 2001 19:13:57

The holidays are coming! I found my tape of Los Straitjackets
doing "Sleigh Ride" from Dec 1997 on Conan O'Brien. And I have Jon &
The Nightriders' version from Moving Target. I'm too sad to admit I
don't have the Ventures Christmas album (yet).
I have almost figured out the entire song. One part is eluding
me...the fast little lick that is played under the "Giddy-yap Giddy-
yap" lyrics. Its probably something very simple but my brain is
blocked. Can anyone help? I'll tab it out and post it when I finish
it.
I've got something like:
<da-da-da> E <da-da-da> E <da-da-da> E F# Eb
Whats the <da-da-da> part?
(BTW, I searched the Internet for the lyrics for this song. You will
not believe how many people have covered this song. Everyone from
Garth Brooks to The Spice Girls.....yikes you should see their
lyrics.)

Howdy...this is actually my first post, but I've been lurking around
since this group started and I love it!! So, since I'm a newbie,
please don't be too harsh if I'm totally wrong on my simplistic
arrangement of "Sleigh Ride".....
I play the da-da-da part just by strumming a gook ol' "A" chord....
-----0---0---0-2---
----2---2---2----4-
---2---2---2-------
--2---2---2--------
-------------------
-------------------........
This is one of those songs that play at least a part of everytime I
pick up my guitar....that's why I love the holidays, then my
neighbors don't think I'm quite as nuts for playing christmas songs
in July!
Good luck!

Hey EG, welcome and thanks for the tip. I will try it out. I was
watching the Los Straitjackets performance, and Eddie Angel has his
hands around the 5th fret or so during that bit, so its quite
possible he is playing those same notes up there (A barre chord).
He then repeats the pattern up the fretboard a bit...would this part
be based around the D chord?.
I know what you are saying about playing Christmas songs. I've been
getting funny looks for practicing this over and over.

It must be nice being able to actually see surf bands to check out
how they play - up here in Seattle, surf isn't the most popular
genre!!! Although I did see the Ventures live about 3 years ago,
kinda cool seeing these guys who are quite a bit older than my
parents still rockin' out.
As far as Sleigh Ride, once again, in my over simplistic arrangement,
for the repeat of this section - I just go up an octave....
--------12----12----12--14---
------14----14----14------12-
----14----14-----14----------
--14----14------14-----------
-----------------------------
-----------------------------.....
BTW - I just kinda figured all of this out based on my 8 year
old "used" cassette dub of the Ventures Christmas Album....

Well I don't see too many surf bands in Iowa! I did see Los
Straitjackets in Iowa City 2 years ago. And Dick Dale usually comes
out somewhere in the midwest when he tours. Man or Astro-Man is also
frequently in Iowa City. They aren't too surfy anymore these days
however.
I watched my Conan tape again and I was hallucinating. Eddie wasn't
at the 5th fret...more like the 3rd or maybe he was doing the A at
the 2nd. But what you have there does work so I will use it until I
figure it out otherwise. Thanks.
