S.D. Antiquity II Pick-Ups

Bong Loard (the_indicators) - 12 May 2005 08:18:55

Here is one for the SG101 archives. Just "threw" in a set of the
Seymour Duncan Antiquity II Surfer pick-ups in my Strat-like Squire
Stagemaster. The pick-ups alone cost more than twice the price of the
guitar. It has a steel tremblock, and 4 springs pinning the trem to
the body and in the trem cavity. Total cost, $125 for guitar, $225 for
pick-ups, $75 (I think?) for trem block = $425. It sounds like a
$1000+ guitar. Although it is a Chinese-made guitar, it has great
action and just plays very sweetly, otherwise I wouldn't have spent
time and effort on it. Thanks to the guy from Longboard Ranch, reading
his reviews pushed me over the edge to buy the Antiquity IIs.

Yeah, I was wondering about those...I'd love to be
able to play through some to see how they really
sound. They're just so expensive next to the
'57/'62's and even the Custom Shop '54's (which get
kinda lukewarm reviews anyway) that I have to
wonder...

Thanks for the praise for my concept of making a cheap
"Custom-Shop" Strat. I originally posted the
suggestion to do this with the $149 Wilson Bros. VM10
'62 Strat Copy, which at least, to me, felt more
playable than any of the Squiers I've tried, and came
much better set-up from the factory than ANY Fender
product I've ever played, regardless of price!
At our last gig, I was approached by a man with a Mexi
'62 R/I Strat who wanted our help from the stage, for
him to sell his axe for $450.00 I showed him my VM10,
which I had played for the entire first set, with the
Callaham Steel Block and the Seymour Surf Pups, which
shut him up and left him with a very sick look on his
face, when I told him my guitar could be replicated
for about $420!

Richard - If you can't trust the word of Longboard
Ranch, then read the corroborating posting from
Bonglord! (There is NO relationship at all between
these two entities, BTW)
In 37 years of playing guitar, I've tried 'em all and
for the additional $$$, the Seymours kick serious butt
for surf players!
