Ignorance at Fender...

supertwangreverb - 10 May 2005 20:29:18

I love my AV Jaguar, so much that I sold my beloved CIJ for a 2nd
AV...and I think they are doing a great job on these, but they do a
lot of stupid stuff these days. I Just went through Fender's
description for the Jaguar...seems they updated it a bit. I found
this slightly amusing...maybe you will as well. "The wacky and
removable Fender Mute is a built-in string-damping device created with
surf bands in mind." - FENDER
The Jaguar was released in '62 so I'm guessing the mute was designed
in late '61...pretty amazing, not much "surf" music was being recorded
at this time! Is Fender saying Leo had the ability to look into the
future?

Leo was pretty visionary - consider that The Fireballs conceived the heavily
muted
"Bulldog" in 1959, maybe Leo foresaw a need for a wacky string mute. Remember,
he
talked to a lot of musicians in crafting his instruments, and was almost
freakishly
prescient in designing for future needs.
So, maybe the Jaguar mute was made in anticipation of the still-unnamed surf
music. But
it is hard for a catalog writer to say, "a built in string-damping device
created with
instrumental rock music bands in mind."
Don't sound as good, do it?
Anyway, it is a chicken or the egg question, I'nt it? Considering Fender's
proximity to the
nascent surf music scene in 1960, it is very likely that Fender knew exactly
what the
musicians were doing. And just as likely, the musicians quickly adapted new tech
into their
arsenal of surf guitar tricks.
Any of you college kids want to do a thesis paper on the development of the
string mute,
its origins and uses?

I'm with you, I don't think Fender had any idea about the upcoming
surf boom. I don't think Fender invented the string mute either, there
were other guitars at the time that had similiar devices. But Leo's
was unique in how his worked. I think Leo just liked gadgety bells and
whistles on his guitars, and the Jaguar was supposed to be the top of
the line guitar, hence more gadgets. But I will agree on the wacky
part...I mean, who actually uses it? :) It's easier to mute with your
palm once you take off the other unnecessary part: the bridge cover. I
recall Paul Johnson saying on Cowabunga that he did use the mute
during his short stint with a Jaguar. But he used it to play chords
for a rhythm part! Then he went back to his strat.
I do recall Mel Waldorf saying he used his mutes a lot, and has even
installed them on Jazzmasters!
The bridge cover, OTOH, is good for one thing: use it when taking
photos of your guitar. Besides that, leave it in your case. ;-)

Hey guys, I was being sarcastic. I have the utmost respect for Mr.
Leo Fender...infact I would not buy a Fender amp that wasn't built
around the time Leo was still around! I just thought it was funny
how Fender worded that.
