When you guys talk about the preferred amps - such as the blonde and
blackface Fender's with 6L6 or 5881 tubes, are you talking about
driving those amps in their
(1)clean, non-distorted range,
(2) their clipping, distorted range because you like the sound those
particular circuits make when clipping, or
(3) something in between, right at the edge of clipping (a Fender
version brown sound, if you will)?
I'm WAS guessing clean because of listening to the old stuff, and
because I never seem to hear you guys talk about micro amps, etc, BUT
THEN I read what Dave Wronski was using to record "Into the Blue
Sparkle" - '59 4 x 10 Bassmen. Vox AC-30's. Yellowjackets, etc, etc...
and I realized everything I thought might be too simplistic..
So I could use guidance from some experienced hands.
Dave
clean non-distorted just under brown.

Clean for single notes, but slightly "brown" for double stops.
Pick hard for break up, lighter for clean.
That's my fave!
Mike/USK
Paul Johnson told me "Mr Moto" was recorded with two
tweed 3X10 Bandmasters.

Clean...with the reverb tank tone knob adding some aggresiveness, but no
overdrive distortion.
