Re: [SurfGuitar101] lets not

dave wronski (stickmandw) - 09 May 2005 11:42:48

Nylon picks dont appeal to me because of the muted
sound. Some people might like them when they want less
attack, and also if they dont like dealing with broken
picks. Gels break, and wear out quickly. However,
lately Ive been getting through an entire gig with one
pick. Remember, I only use the light guage, which are
blue, for very quiet stuff. Th rest of the time
light/med, which are green. They usually sell them in
a fishbowl on the front counter. GC sells the in hang
cards.

Getting through an entire gig with a single pick is good, Dave, but I'm a cheap
guy and I've been getting through a whole year with one pick, a Herco Heavy
thumb pick. I haven't dropped one yet! I only retire 'em when they become too
worn.
I understand that Billy Gibbons uses a pesco as a pick.

If you like the heavy sound, the most rad is Modulous
Graphite. Heavier sound than even a Herco Gold.

I used to only use Nylons. .46s to be exact. I could double pick just
fine with them. I loved them but I cut my finger at a gig because it
was too thin and I got my jag all bloody.(you can see it in The 'Verb
photo album here). I switched to L-M Gels. I broke them too often
playing rhythm. They were fine for a couple of weeks and then they all
broke at the same time. Now I use those when I play lead. They sound
great and I prefer the sound over the Tortex and Nylons. I find they
have the right amount of spring I want. For rhythm now I use the .60
Tortex picks. Those are the orange ones. They don't have enough give
for my taste. The .50s are too thin.

I understand that Billy Gibbons uses a pesco as a pick.
Billy's a great player, but the words from the Reverend's mouth ain't
always gospel. Like down tuning (to 'C'!!) with .008 strings (?) or
hooking up 6 bionix expandoras in series?! He's got a great sense of
humor, tho'.
Marty, I've been experimenting with picks made of bone, horn,
(coconut)shell, ebony and rosewood all in an effort to find a pick
with the properties of tortoise shell. They all sound quite
different, but none come as close as the Wegens, apparently.
Unfortunately, his picks are way too thick for electric playing, have
to be ordered from europe and cost $15 a pop.
