Re: Tremolo picking - pickiness

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 08 May 2005 17:19:10

Hmmm...this is all getting a little personal, isn't it? As a writer, I find that
it is often
difficult to communicate precisely 100% percent of the time. Occasionally, I
offend when I
don't mean to and fail to convey meaning when that is what I set out to do. If
it is hard for
me to write - and I make a living at it - imagine how it is for amateurs!
So, a few things: please, let's try and take other's comments in the spirit in
which they are
(mostly) intended. That is, in the spirit of being helpful. And, let's also try
not to be
offensive with our words.
This site is about constructive conversation, not about flaunting one's
knowledge or
boosting one's ego. Lurk on this site long enough, and you figure out the voices
that you
personally value and those that you discount. I, for one, know Marty as someone
with
somewhat rigid opinions; but listen to his version of "Cumbanchero" and it is
hard to
disqualify his authority.
That said, picks are a pretty trivial thing to argue 'bout, are they not? Of
course, I've seen
guys fight to a bloody mess over quarters on a pool table. Stupidity? Clearly.
Re: the Surf Sound. We all agree that everyone has their own opinion about what
constitutes the "Surf Sound." And we all tweek the elements - some use a Mosrite
or
DiPinto, not a Fender Jaguar or Jazzmaster. Some use distortion. Some use
lighter strings.
Etc. But if you tweek too many elements, before you know it, you are playing Van
Halen!
So, if someone says that something is "crucial" to the surf sound, take it with
a grain of
salt. But bear in mind, with each ingredient you take away, you change the
recipe until the
cake no longer tastes or looks like the one you meant to bake!

Hey Gavin,
Are you saying we're getting too picky about picks? ;-)

nicely stated, Gavin...like always, your a voice of
calmness and reasonableness among the sometimes chaotic
crashing of the reverberation waves...
