A short Dick Dale concert review

Chris (kahunatikiman) - 08 May 2005 03:04:12

I'll keep this short.
I just got back from the D.D. show here in Denver. PACKED house!
The second opening band, The Orangu-Tones - garage/frat rock, were
really cool!
Highlights: The new drummer is pretty darned good! Sam played
awesome as usual.
Dick now has a roadie sit next to the reverb tank, and change
settings at his request. He played his version of "Bo Diddley",
but he did it sans reverb and didn't use a pick! It was cool! It
brought out how good Dicks timing and rhthym are. He also played
the drums, and the trumpet, and the bass with the drum sticks. I
think it's cool.....
"Esperanza" I havent heard Dick play it with this much force in
a long time. maybe he read my post a few days ago.....
Dick didnt' sing too much, didn't tell a lot a stories, and he
didn't pull out the accoustic guitars. Yeah!!!
"Amazing Grace" It has some real power. Some might think it
would be cheesey, but I think it was a highlight of the show....
Lowlights: None from Dick, lots of crowd stupidity. Tons of
weed. Ugh!
All in all, one of the better D.D. shows I've seen. He is still
the King! The crowd goes ape for all the songs we Surf Guitar 101
people groan at. (House of the rising sun, Fever, etc)
Chris
P.S. There is always one woman in the crowd that looks almost
homeless, standing right up front. when D.D. plays a slow song,
it's like the music is going straight into her soul and moving her
to places never reached before. Look for her at the next D.D. show.
