Dan Bartley (bigtwangguy) - 06 May 2005 14:57:35

Hey Brian, will there be another mp3 compilation when this one is over?

Only if you bastards promise not to send me 50% of them on the last
day. (Just kidding, of course... =:-O )
Sure, I think so, why not? Maybe later this summer?
So I've downloaded everything and have it scattered across my hard
drive. It's gonna take me a little while to organize and put up this
latest batch. But here is the final score: 33 mp3 files! That was way
more than I imagined.
It was really fun listening to what people came up with, and matching
Yahoo ID's to mp3's. Thanks again to member greenbirdbath (dude, what
is your real name?) who suggested this in the first place.
I'll make an announcement when everything is up. Please be patient
with me.
When everything is up, I hope we can have some discussion about the
project, and maybe get some threads going about the various mp3's. I
think everyone is a little gun-shy about discussing each other's work.
For example, speaking for myself, it gets harder to post reviews of
bands CD's when members of that band are on the list! Maybe the same
thing is happening here. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed it. Remember,
this project isn't a showcase of the current state of surf, it's just
the list members sharing some music they made with each other for fun.
In that light I think this was a very cool project. Thanks to all of
you.
Thanks,
BN

I am not gunshy about talking about the MP3s. I think the 'Verb's song
is great.

Ha-ha wise guy.
Actually I think I'm gonna have to burn them all onto a CD and give
them a listen that way. 33 tracks is a lot to absorb at once.
BTW, I've seen some preview artwork for a CD cover...totally awesome
and insane. If anyone else would like to contribute in that
department, please contact me off list.
The updates are going well, I'm just waiting on a few folks to send me
some descriptions and stuff and we'll be done (minus the artwork - but
that can come later).

Brian:
I completely agree with you about your apprehensions in discussing the mp3
submissions - A strong suggestion: communicate with Phil Dirt and ask him to
revise his 3-26 review to include all 33 submissions.
That way, we can all gang up on Phil in future threads (just kidding!).
But, also that way, at least the submissions can be critiqued by someone who is:
1. Neutral, outside the group, and not up-close to anyone involved; 2.
Acknowledged by most surf music fans as one of the most authoritative, qualified
voices for evaluating current-day surf music recordings.
IMHO this would be the best way to handle getting the submissions all reviewed.

Bruce D

Bruce,
I don't care so much about "getting them reviewed", as a lot of the
mp3's aren't meant for any kind of release, nor are they meant to be
the current state of surf. I just wanted some discussion about them.
It seems that so far, people have gone to some hard work to make these
things, they get posted, and then not a peep from anyone about them.
Regards,
BN

Your idea to burn them all to a cd is a good one, Brian. Most of
the tunes I have only listened to once, because my computer
speakers stink. After a few listens on a real stereo, i'd be
willing to give my opinions.

No problem, maybe next round I'll contribute something a bit more, er,
substantial.
Very impressive group of songs by the members.
The name's Van.
