Custom Shop Surf Strats

stratrhythm - 04 May 2005 19:48:31

I uploaded some good pictures I found of Fender Custom Shop Surf
Strats. The first picture is of two shown at "03 Winter NAMM. At
least the first two were built by Dennis Galuszka. The second picture
with the surfboards was for a promotion done in Germany. The guitars
have Jaguar 24" necks. Tops are balsa.
Gavin, is this what you have in mind?
BTW, I wonder if this the "Dennis" that Mr. Wronski referred to in one
of his posts as a luthier he could recommend?

Even earlier, there were some that had solid paint, a stringer down the middle,
etc. If you
look just above the photos you posted, you will see my first effort, a Strat
clone. This,
however, will be a rear-routed Jazzmaster with a white paint job, stringer down
the
middle, Lake Placid Blue edge and black pinstriping.
The last set (the German ones) were the best I've seen. I don't want a lot of
wood on mine,
if you look at the surfboards from the 1960s, they were almost entirely glass &
foam,
never wood. I want mine to look like my old Hobie Surfboard.

If you have never seen one these in person they are truly stunning! The
guitar shop that I use has had several of these and I played one. They come
with a one of a kind Fender case but be prepared to pay handsomely for one.
This is a masterbuilt guitar and is defintely an investment piece. Also
check out the 1983 "Bowling Ball" Strat at www.stratcollector.com. Very cool
finish against a maple neck.
