Key: AV = American Vintage
CIJ = Crafted in Japan
I prefer the Jaguar, it works easier with heavier strings than the
Jazzmaster does, and I think heavy flatwound strings are the KEY
ingredient to good surf tone. I also like the Jaguar pickups better
than the Jazzmaster's. I do like Jazzmasters tho, and I'd take one
over a Stratocaster. I have owned a few, but the Jaguar comes first
IMO. One thing I've noticed...the AV Jaguar's neck profile it thicker
than the CIJ Jaguar. However the CIJ Jazzmaster has a thicker neck
than any of the AV Jazzmasters I've played, now that I think about it
the AV Jazzmasters I have played didn't have very comfortable necks
for my long fingers...which would make little sense as to why the "24
inch scale works better for me than the "25.5. The thicker AV Jaguar
neck I have has to be the most comfortable neck I've played.
The AV '62 reissues are EXCELLENT guitars and are built better than
some vintage pieces I've played. They also have the slab necks.
You're not going to find a vintage slab neck Jaguar or Jazzmaster for
1000.00. However, you could find an AV for that. The CIJs are decent
guitars as well. I've owned a few of these and continue to own a CIJ
Jaguar, however it fails in comparison with to my AV
Jaguar....but...it's pretty good after the standard modifications.
That being said against the CIJs...I recorded our first album with a
stock CIJ Jaguar and I've been told it sounds good.
hmmm....none of this is really any help is it?

actually it is some help. i live 3 hours from any stores that sell
guitars, and have only found one jaguar to try out. it seemed to have
a fat neck compared to my strat (and my PRS which has a wide thin
neck) so i didn't know if this was the norm, or if they come with
other necks. the store employee couldn't answer that question. i have
small hands but long fingers so certain necks feel a bit awkward to
me, but i know it's just something you adjust to.....i guess i'm a
little timid about the heavier strings also. my strat has 10's and i'm
comfortable with them, but a little afraid to move 'up'. before
investing in something new, i'm trying to get as much imput as
possible from those familiar with these instruments. thanks, carol

Carol,
You'll probably find the Jaguar neck more comfortable - the shorter scale makes
it easy to
go up a string guage or two and still find the strings comfortable to fret.
Plus, the Jag is
nicely pimped out with all that chrome ;-)
The American-made Jag is extremely good quality - my surf-guitar friend Paul has
one
and I can't tell you how green with envy I am! I had a Jap Jag and so can say, I
was very
happy with the MIJ models until I tried the American Vintage Reissue! This maay
sound
touchy-feely, but the AVRI model just felt substantially better, more solid, and
it sang
even when it wasn't plugged into an amp.
IF you can afford the hefty price tag or find a nice US Jag on eBay, I think
you'll be
happiest. If you can get a steal on a MIJ, you may want to invest in some AVRI
pickups to
get tone closer to the originals.
My ¢2, and worth every penny.
Gavin
