Dings :(

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 27 Apr 2005 07:51:10

So I was playing my jag last night and I just happened to look down,
and there is a ding in it, through the paint! I have no idea how this
happened or even when it happened. It's on the edge of the guitar just
a few inches above the bottom strap pin. It's covered by my arm while
I'm playing it, so at least it's not too visible. The jaguar is candy
apple red, and the ding exposes a lot of gold flake and some black.
So do you guys go through the 7 stages of grief when this happens? I
was devastated. Or should I just chalk it up to the guitar getting
some character? Bummed...

I usually find that first ding a relief. I can finally stop worrying
about hurting the guitar and get on with playing it with gusto.

Definetly ! Wood won`t last forever and "works". I have two bass
guitars a newer Fender Precision and my good ol bass [a Ken Rose fender
imitate..], and what should I say, I Love to play the older one,
because I played with that instrument some years, it`s easier too play,
because I know that baby. Perhaps, it`s just objective instrument
fetish nonsense, but I feel good with that. Anyway, as long as the
electronics, the mechanics and a the neck is okay, I`ll be happy.
guitars galore,

as long as you don't overdo it by actually sanding the guitar to bear
wood for supposedly vintage looks, like *"some company" does, dings,
scratches and chips missing give a guitar character, and make it
better identifiable when it gets stolen.
(how many of you once wrote down all the serial numbers of their
equipment for that and insurance purpose, and now not have a clue
where that piece of paper is, and besides, are five guitars and an
amp or two behind with that list? I did)
this makes my wonder, btw, how many relic-strat buyers are of the
careful kind ... proper case, put it in stand, wipe it off? - go to
the luthier 'can you repair this ding in my relic strat?'
My main axe is dung all over (is that a word?) and since it is a
worthless p.o.c., it is easy not to care. I have a strong antipathy
against guitar stands, gigbags fit in amp packed cars so much better
then cases, so i am happy with cheap guitars.
If i had something beautiful and worth taking care of as many on this
list do, I would (try to) be careful with it. then again, i have
dropped the 'good' guiatrs i had so many times that i simply might
not have the personality for fine equipment.
I like, the 'first ding is a relief' approach. like the guitar has
just lost it's virginity. her skin is no longer unblemmished - but
she's got that fire in her eyes now! you're going to HAVE to play her
more often now.

Man, I remember the first ding I got in my AV
Precision Bass. I was playing it at band practice and
the drummer's China Boy cymbal fell over and "THWOCK",
cut right into the finish above the bridge. I was
devastated, and gouges look especially nasty on those
nitro finishes. I just obsessed over every little
scratch on that bass. I got rid of it because I was
always afraid to take it to gigs and after a while got
to the point that I couldn't justify having a really
expensive instrument sitting under my bed. I
regretted selling it as soon as I packed it up and
shipped it off and vowed that if I ever get another
"nice" guitar like that that I'd play it as much as
possible no matter what.

LOL. I totally imagined the look on your face when you discovered that. You
know BN eventually you will get another and the first one won't seem so bad.
Ask yourself this, Are the bumps and bruises I have gotten given me
character. You bet...... ;-)

Now this brings up a good question. What, where and how is a good way to put an
idetifying "stamp" on a guitar for security purposes? I do have my serial # list
up to date. It has to be if you buy the ASCAP insurance. But some guitars don't
have a serial # or have one that can be easily removed.

This is dumb but I worry more about dings to the cases than to the guitars. This
weekend I was distraught to find a scuff on an alligator case that I had
specially made for a Mosrite. I also get ticked over marks and scratches to my
nice Fender tweed and brown tolex cases.

Oh no Brian! You can't play surf anymore!!! You have to resort to punk
rock now!!
J/K, sorry to hear about that. I wouldn't know, but maybe there is
someone to repair those sort of dings. Anyone?

My 65 Jag was actually set on fire in her Punk days and then an artist
friend beautifully painted 3 angel/human creatures on the front and a full
blown Gothic, Adam & Eve scene on the back with dark storm clouds moving in
as a back ground. Yup, talk about character, this once tobacco sunburs
guitar is very unique looking.

It was like I got hit over the head with a bar stool. I was just
stunned. Remember that video of Nancy Kerrigan right after she got
clubbed? That was me...screaming "why?...why?..why?".
And it's a big one too....I have no F#$%@ idea how it got there.
On top of that, I changed the strings on it last weekend. And ever
since it has been playing like ass. Buzzing in the bridge; when I fret
up high the strings hit the neck pickup, lots of weird rattles....I
get so fed up with how finicky these guitars are.
So I just got finished taking off the neck (for only the 2nd time - it
scares the crap out of me) and adjusting the truss rod. Aaaaahhhhh
finally it's back to it's old self. I guess it likes to keep me on my
toes. It's never acted up like this before. I even put the exact same
brand and gauge of strings on it, and it got all cranky. I guess maybe
it was mad it got a ding.
That is really going to bother me, not knowing how that got there.
This is my most expensive and prized guitar. Oh well...it builds
character, you see... :-(
As an aside, I have 4 shims in it from the factory. It's also
remarkable to me how loose the screws are that hold on the neck. I
mean, they are tight, but not cranked. I guess one of the big mistakes
you can make is tightening those really tight; the screws wills strip
and then you are screwed.
And I am going out of tune every 2 minutes. I guess it takes a while
for the neck and the strings to reach equilibrium after monkeying with
it. I'll leave it overnight and check on it tomorrow.
I really want to get an AV Jazzmaster someday, but I'm not sure if I
can make myself maintain two of these things. I'll have to find
another set of *vintage* Mustang saddles for it (reissue Mustang
saddles aren't wide enough - the crime of the century), and doing
set-ups are like building a ship in a bottle... sigh.. :-)
I gotta get my strat setup again and play that for a while. I think
I'll take that to someone; it's all out of whack. I want to try these
Rotosound purples out that Ivan recommended. I bought a set about 9
months ago and haven't gotten them on yet.
Enough rambling,
BN

-Brian,
Do you keep your guitar in a case, or on a stand, or wall hanger?
If on a stand, not to start a family fued. But is it possible someone
in your house could have done it?
The biggest mystery for me is how a Bass E string( not that old, or
worn) could break while away at work??????
Just cover the ding with a sticker :-)

The biggest mystery for me is how a Bass E string( not that old, or
worn) could break while away at work??????
Temperature changes could cause the neck of the guitar to bow, thus causing a
string or two to break on it's own. Drum skins will do the same friggin' thing.
Where are you keepin' your axe at?
Billy
P.S. Are The Plank's playin' HB Pier on Sunday?
