Yamaha Surf Guitar in Business Week

Dave Becker (novapup2001) - 26 Apr 2005 21:22:40

I like how the new Yamaha Surf Guitar (yellow model) made the Gadgets
and Gear section of Business Week this week.
What do people think of the new Yamahas? I would think this constituent
would have an important role in determining it's success.

I found this. It sounds to me like the SG(V) line is getting
reintroduced. There are another Yamaha called the SG but it doesn't
seem to be what they are talking about here and if Dave called it a
surf guitar. I hope the reintroduce the SGV line here. I would not
hesitate to buy one.

I found a pic:
It looks like your basic strat clone, shaped like an old yammy sg.

Thanks for the link Phil.
I am not a big fan of that guitar. The headstock doesn't look right
not matching an may be smaller. The trem unit is probably pretty
cheap. And the strat pickups will make it sound generic, assuming they
are crappy strat pickups. I was hoping for the SGV-800 to be
reintroduced. Hopefully there will be different models.

If you try to buy it, it says 'Coming this fall!'
Hmmm...

I like it... I have to admit that I took out the PUs
that came with my 800, and put in Kent Armstrong
Lipsticks, but if it had come with Strat PUs, I might
have stuck with them.

I was wondering about that in the Slacktone Surf Party video. I
wasn't sure if you had gotten hold of a custom SGV800 or put the
lipsticks in yourself. I like the soapbar style pups in mine but they
are a little noisy.

Life is short. Play for the music. Wear your heart on your sleeve.

I'm glad I held onto my SGV 800. This new one's just
been Strato-fied. Not that there's anything wrong
with Strats, but the reasons I was first drawn to the
SGV were the differences.

My apologies. This was in Newsweek (the edition with Pope Benedict on
the cover). I think the greenbirdbath found a correct image link. I was
referring to these guitars:
Seems like a lot of room at the upper end of the neck. I guess the
reviews will start appearing in the monthly music rags soon.
