The Exotic Moods of The Cocktail Preachers

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 26 Apr 2005 13:51:56

Wow! I can't stop smiling...I usually like my surf music fast and
furious, screaming through the pipeline if you will. But even I need a
change of pace, and here it is. This CD is just brilliant. Tasty and
well played. The Cocktail Preachers play covers and originals with a
decidedly exotic bent, using steel and acoustic guitars, stand up
bass, congas, and even the ukelele (for Miser-Uke of course). You can
just picture them smiling as they came up with these very unique
arrangements for these classic songs. But don't fret, they haven't
abandoned the electric guitars and reverb; these are still present on
a few songs to vary the sounds and textures. Check out this track
list:
Slave Girl
The Wedge
Apache
Quiet Surf
Blue Velvet
A Taste of Honey
Highball Holiday
Kawanga Bop
Margarita Meltdown
Martini 5-0
Tear Drop
Penetration
Viva Las Vegas
Enchanted Sea <------ my current favorite
Pipeline (live)
Tequila (live)
Miser-Uke (live)
Hawaiian Squad Car (live)
I know what you are thinking, I was too. Oh boy the CP's have joined
the Hawaiin shirt wearin' oldies crowd. Not so. Not at all. These
aren't just the same old surf covers. Each one has a cool exotic spin
to it. Great playing, great arrangements, unique stuff. I love it. Put
this on the old CD player and enjoy a Mai Tai. Perfect party music.
Great job guys!

Thanks Brian!
I'll try to get some samples on the web page (cocktailpreachers.com).
You can order the CD there as well.
BTW,
Yes, that's me (for better or worse) ripping up my fingers on a $49 MF
cheese-grader baritone uke...

I love the last Cocktail Preachers album and I love slow hawaiianesque
music. I own 4-5 'ukuleles including a $600 tenor uke. Great
instrument. I can't wait to hear Hawaiian Squad Car.

Jeff (bigtikidude) - 28 Apr 2005 21:40:06

I got mine yesterday in the mail.
Please don't take this as a put down Phil,
But I put this disc on and was asleep in 4 songs.
It is a good thing that I look for in relaxing music.
I'll have to give it a spin again while awake, :-)
But of what I heard so far, I'd say it's a must have.
How many of those did you press Phil? I might need to order a few
more.

Ha Ha! The subliminal messages are working!
You should now be sending me all your money. I already have all of
Brian's...LOL!
Seriously, I don't take it as a put down. It's not the type of CD that
you 'listen' to, per se. This is one of those CDs that you put on right
after mixing a pitcher of Zombies. Or you pop in the car player after
having a shitty day at work. Background music where your mind is on
other things. I guess it would be more like Tiki music.
It was recorded with Trader Vic's in mind. If you've been there, you
know.
Thanks for the opinion, Jeff. I do appreciate it.
I have a few more, let me know how many you need.
