Sentinals Big Surf Album

Jacob Dobner (jacobdobner) - 25 Apr 2005 17:36:48

I just recieved this album today, CD. My question, for whoever owns
this album, is if on any of the tracks there is any flaws in the sound
quality. On several songs the sound breaks up. I can send it back if
it is the album.
It is a pretty good album. The sound quality is off the chart for any
of the first wave stuff I own. I got a New Dimensions album yesterday
and I prefer this one. The New Dimensions album talked about how they
were on the same label for a couple albums and how their photo got put
on the Sentinals album, Surfer Girl I think. The guitarist, Nunez?,
gets great tone out of his guitar. One of the better younger
guitarists of his day. Hard to say since Messina was so young and I am
sure there were other I haven't heard.

Warning: Do not buy any of the old Del Fi standard surf releases such as those
by the Sentinals and the Lively Ones. Most have drop outs with the exception of
the "Surf City" Lively Ones CD. Those defects were not on the original albums.

The Sentinals and Lively Ones albums have also been released on 2fers
on Collector's Choice with much better sound quality.

I also have the "Big Surf", but I have it on vinylo and can`t report
any sound problems. Perhaps Del-Fi did a shit job when mastering on
cd ? Beneath the "Big Surf" Lp, I bought several other re-issued Del-
Fi stuff on vinyl [Lively Ones etc.], the only thing pissed me off was
the price [25 Deutschmark at that time...], but fortunately I grabed
some of the LP`s from a guy who [mentally ill] sold his record
collection for some bucks.
Anyway, "Big Surf" is a great album, mixing exotic influences,
unorthodox instrumentations and the power of reverb drenched guitars.
thumbs up too for the way it is produced..wow.

I've never seen the Collector's Choice issues, but I think we should
give credit where credit's due: Del-Fi did make amends for issuing
those terrible early CDs by releasing "Hang Five!" and "Heads Up!" by
the Lively Ones, which compile almost all of their stuff on two CDs
with great packaging, excellent liner notes (by Domenic Priore
in "Hang Five!") with lot of photos, and most importantly, really
good sound quality. If you're gonna get the Lively Ones, those are
the CDs to get. They did the same with "Sunset Beach" by the
Sentinals, where you can find both of the Sentinals albums in their
entirety (in the right order, too), plus a comp-only track, too! And
again, the packaging is really good, the liner notes are fantastic,
very detailed, and the sound quality superb. (Repertoire label also
had a high-quality issue of the two Sentinals albums, with excellent
sound quality, profuse liner notes (by Elliot Kendall), and a lot of
photos, which I would highly recommend, though I suspect it's not
easy to find anymore.)
Everyone should definitely stay clear of the very early Del Fi CD
reissues - all the ones that have the original artwork and the black
spine - they sound horrible, horrible.
As far as the Sentinals, I would say that they were first and
foremost a white R&B band. Del-Fi had them come up with some surf,
and some of it was unbelievably good! But it was a small part of
their repertoire, and in fact, there's little surf music to be found
on their second album (The Pipe and Twilighter would be the only two
that remotely qualify). But their first album, "Big Surf", is chock-
full of great stuff, like the immortal Latinia, Big Surf, Exotic, Tor-
Chula, Latin Soul, and the gorgeous Sunset Beach. I think these are
must-haves for any true surf music fan.
Ivan
PS Does anybody know who did the original version of "Exotic"? Was
it the Sentinals or somebody else? Many other bands have covered
this great song in the sixties, so it's not very clear. I always
associate it first with the Sentinals.

"Sunset Beach" is sadly in mono when excellent stereo
sources exist. Their "Live In Las Vegas" LP shows
their R&B roots very well.
Good question on "Exotic." Bruce Morgan wrote it and
shopped it around.
There are three distinctly different arrangements of
the song.
The classic Sentinals surf cut is unique.
The rougher more rock version was cut by Dave Myers
and the Surftones, the Original Surfaris, and Bob
Vaught and the Renegaids.
Then there was the mariachi-like horn arrangement done
by the Rhythm Kings and the the Sentinals (on their
"Live in Las Vegas" LP).
I have no idead what Morgan had in mind, but that
would be interesting to know.
On a similar note, I've long thought that the way Al
Casey did "Baja" was the way Lee Hazelwood intended.
Lee doesn't answer inquiries about it!
