Slacktone In Guitar Player Magazine

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 24 Apr 2005 14:22:36

I finally got my Guitar Player; our mailman must be on crack because
he delivered it to our neighbor, who has been out of town for over a
week. He's also been delivering other neighbors mail to us, and I'm
afraid where my Satan's Pilgrim's tickets are going to go...
Anyway, this is from the May 2005 Guitar Player, with Joe Perry on the
cover, in the "Rants and Raves" section, page 102.
Slacktone: Rough Surf, Rough Mix, Live in Berlin
Lets just get this out of the way right now; Slacktone guitarist Dave
Wronski has taken the genre of surf guitar further than anyone since
Dick Dale. And he doesn't do it the easy way by simply grafting other
styles of music onto the tried-and-true surf forumula. No way, dude.
Wronski's style is pure surf, as his cascading flurries of
double-picked cacophony surrounded in glorious reverb and echo will
attest. Instead, Wronski innovates with an evolved melodic sensibility
and use of dynamics that makes him the utter cream of the longboard
crop, as he phrases with a delicacy seldom heard in the genre. And
don't let the record's title scare you off. In fact, I find its raw,
uncontrolled sound preferable for such a primal brand of music. Plus,
you get to hear Wronski disassemble "Miserlou" in all of it's live,
unpolished glory. Trust me folks, Wronski is as bad as they come.

Those guys at GP are real cool, and have asked
Slacktone to play their monthly Guitar Player Magazine
show at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco. Its on
June 21, and well be joined by Pollo Del Mar.

I got this CD (Rough Surf, Rough Mix, Live In Berlin) on Friday, and
all I can say is WOW!! It's probably my fave Slacktone release so
far because of 1) songlist and 2) sound. The songlist is superior to
their "Live In Prague" CD for four reasons: Longboard Legato,
Rosarito 3-Day, Coffin Closer, and Rell Sunn Aloha. These are four
out of my five favorite Slacktone songs, and they weren't included on
Live In Prague - and they sound awesome here! In addition, I love
their versions of Jon & the Nightriders' Rumble at Waikiki, and the
great Penetration. As far as the sound, it's very clear and
energetic, and I personally slightly prefer Sam's bass playing to
Mike's - it's just a bit grittier and more energetic.
I'd HIGHLY recommend you all pick this up! I got it straight from
the band's site. It truly rules!
And congratulations, Dave, for the great review, and even more for
the Guitar Player gig! Awesome! Maybe that'll open the door to
return to greater coverage of surf music in GP, such as they had some
five-six years ago. Knock 'em dead -for all of us!

For me, on that album, that big difference is Rosarito. Best recording
of any Slacktone song. Just perfect. Not my favorite but just such a
nice recording of it. I really like the beginning of Longboard Legato.
It almost seems like Dave messed up and then covered it up with that
little beginning piece. Not sure since it sounds so damn good. But
Glide isn't on the album. I would glady trade Coffin Closer for Glide.
Glide, to me, is the ultimate Slacktone song.

Ivan, you give a nearly identical review to the one I gave upon hearing Live in
Berlin. It really is a great selection of Slacktone tracks with excellent sound.

Jacob,
I think what you may be talking about is, Dave does these little
10 to 20 second variations on the songs, before he actually starts
the songs. I am so used to hearing them live, that when I listen to
the cds, I think something is missing.

What I was thinking what heppened was he hit the wrong first note for
the intro to Longboard and instead of restarting he came up with that
on the spot. Damn you for saying you are used to hearing them live. I
have never had the chance to see them. Maybe this September if they
have some shows when I am going to be in California. If we can get
enough gigs.
