SF Reverb Tanks & what I'm listening to ?

Rodney Fraser (windmillsg2000) - 23 Apr 2005 21:09:13

Saw a SF reverb tank in shop yesterday, there hasn't been much discussion on the
BF vs SF merits regarding the tanks,so has anyone got opinions ? Has there been
a blind fold test yet ? Would a new RI tank be preferable to a SF one in good
condition ?
Last week I listened to:
A Few Guitars More - the Morricone comp, very good
The Astronauts - Surfin' with/ Everthinfg is A-OK , hey its Baja in its orginal
glory,good fun
Mulchmen - Louder Than Dirt,Thicker than Mud - great title, some good, some not
so.
This week it is
Aqua Velvets - Guitar Noir - that sweet strat sound, very good
The Eliminators - Unleashed - class act, excellent sound.
and also I've been listening to Marty Tippens practice what he preaches
The Fabulous Planktones - Live at the Sinbad - terrific songs, just fabulous !!
BTW How do the modern day Exotics stand in the group ratings ? Any one got their
"Go-Go Guitars" ?

Hey Rodney,
I'm guessing there is no significant difference in the sound of silver face vs
black face tanks even if not all components match up. Tube reverb from Fender
tanks is such a lush sound that I always question any supposed differences that
get mentioned. I've noticed that a lot of folks who get their first reverb tanks
don't realize what's involved and they're quick to think something must wrong.
Does it need different tubes or caps etc..? But the sound of a tube reverb tank
is a major departure from standard amp reverbs. It's not clean and guitar notes
will loose some definition. There's a learning curve. The trick is to find the
right settings for given songs.
Thanks for the nice comments on Sinbad!

Silverface reverb tanks are completly different from blacface. you
can look up the schematics at schematicheavendotcom. as far as i can
tell it uses a different reverb transformer too, so it would be very
hard to convert.
What i have read about them they don't sound nearly as good as
6G15's, but then again, there is a lot of bs on the web. I have never
heard one personally.
Listen to it, and if you like what you hear go for it, as long as you
don't expect it sound like a 6g15 (unless of course it does already)
I have seen them put up on ebay for vintage pricess, but don't know
whether they were sold ...
good luck

Being a trad-style surf guitarist, the sound of my reverb is quite critical to
me.
I own an original brown '63 Fender Reverb unit, a Silverface '67 or '68, and
(gasp!) an early '70's Fender Solid-State Reverb unit.
I'd only use the solid-state one if both the other units were down. To my very
demanding ear, the difference in quality of reverb, springiness, and tone
between the brown and sliverface units is extremely minor. Both units have been
recently refurbed, but no modifications made so they are 99.99% as they came
from the factory.
If I rate the brown unit at "10", the silverface unit gets a solid "9", and the
solid-state unit "7 to 7.5".
Reverb is our friend.

What would be a RI unit on your scale? And how about on board reverb
compared to the solid state reverb unit. I have a RI unit and I have
always been curious about the vintage units. I play rhythm so it
doesn't matter as much. I do need new tubes. That much I know. My
reverb is very harsh. The original tubes that came with it don't work
and my replacements were crap.

Everybody has an opinion, and more often than not, they conflict with
each other. If you want cold hard facts, there are virtually none.
> Has there been a blind fold test yet?
Blind testing? On *this* group? Ha, keep dreaming. You will get a
hundred opinions, but no one has gone so far as to gather any
empirical facts to back them up. All their arguments fall apart the
moment you ask them to prove which one sounds better. You might as
well ask this group what your favorite dessert is. How should we
know? Someone is going to tell you apple pie, someone else is going
to say ice cream, and yet another person will tell you lemon pudding.
But only you know what you like.
> Would a new RI tank be preferable to a SF one in good condition?
For something as personal as your tone, my advice to you is to go out
and try them both. Side-by-side, if at all possible, and with *your*
gear. Let *your* ear decide. You may find that you prefer the
Silverface, or you may find that you prefer the RI. The best thing is
to just try them both, and pick the one you like. The worst thing you
can do is let someone else tell you what you'll like.
Now, if it's a particular tone you're after, then it might be worth
asking for gear guidance here. Name a track, album, or artist whose
tone you are trying to capture, and then maybe you'll get some useful
input, i.e. the guitar, the gauge of string, the reverb tank, the amp,
etc. Otherwise, you're just being led on by someone else's opinions
and personal preferences without any supporting facts.
Good luck...

I think the big problem in the whole RI vs. Vintage vs. whatever else
debate is that every amp/reverb unit/guitar is different. Especially
the amps and reverb units. Our lead guitarists reverb unit sounds so
much better than mine. It comes down to a better tone. There will be
some people who disagree on what sounds better but for the most part I
feel if we were all in the same room we would agree on what amps and
reverb units sound better. The reason we don't is because not all of
our gear is in perfect shape. If it was all perfect and sounds the way
it should then there would be a concise answer as to the better tone
or sound. Maybe not as much on amps but I feel that is so for the
reverb units.
Who knows.

Hey Jacob:
They're overpriced, but the original Reverb Units from the early 60's are my
first choice, then followed by the succeeding generations.
The only real issue with the R/I units is printed circuit board vs. hand wiring.
There are relatively inexpenisve mods that can improve their performance and
sound, and at $300-$400 they're pretty reasonable alternatives to spending
$1,200 and up for a brown original '63!
The tubes make a major difference, so much of your dissatisfaction with the
sound quality of your unit probably boils down to putting in better tubes. A
very reasonably priced alternative to NOS RCA, GE, Sylvania, etc., are the
excellent 6V6 and 12AX7 tubes being made under the JJ-Tesla brand. You can buy
these from Antique Electronic Supply in Phoenix, AZ, (www.tubesandmore.com).
The JJ's run about $11 for the 6V6 and $8 for the 12AX7 and they've been getting
rave reviews from vintage-sound freaks across the country.
The solid state unit is at the bottom of my list of Fender Reverb Units, but it
DOES have the Hammond Spring Tank, so it is a real spring reverb. IMHO it's way
better than digital, modelling, or emulation, and it's way deeper than any
on-board reverb I've heard. The tone/sound is NOT exactly the same as the tube
units, so you'd have to actually try it out to see whether or not you like the
sound.
Fortunately, rare as they are, the old Fender solid state Reverb Units do come
up on ebay fairly regularly and sell typically at $150-$250, a pretty reasonable
price compared against all the others. If you bought one in that price range,
and didn't like it, you shouldn't have much trouble getting your money back out
of it on resale through ebay.
Getting the sound you want is really a very individual thing, so all I can tell
you is, within the scope of your budget, try on a few alternatives and choose
the one that your ears like the best!
Good luck,
Bruce D

Thanks Bruce. I am going to take the Reverb Unit to the amp tech I go
to. I need new tubes for my Showman as well. The tech offered to do
all the work only for the price of the tubes.

Hey Jacob - What model Showman do you have? I know you've said
before, but I'm being lazy and asking.....
What tubes are in it now? What are you going to put in it?
You'll have to give us a comparision before/after.....

'64 "single" Showman. I have no clue what tubes are in it now. They
labels are worn off. Just the standard 6L6s. The amp tech recognized
them. They are really cheap and my amp is only at 80w with them in. I
will give a comparision when I get it done.
