Dan Bartley (bigtwangguy) - 23 Apr 2005 12:41:29

I'm a Gretsch player who's thinking about getting an AVRI '57 Strat. I'm
wondering, when you put the big strings on a Strat (12's,13's,14's) do you have
to raise the action really high or can you get away with low action? These 43
year old hands have really worn tendons!
Cheers
Dan

When I went from 11's to 12's I was able to lower the action a little.
The action still isn't that low though either. It is comfortable. Any
lower than what I have it at, and I'll get fret buzz.

I use 13's on a couple of Strats. Tighten the truss rod and you'll be able to
keep the action low. My hands are two years older than yours and far prefer the
feel of the heavy strings.

These guys have answered your question, may I add?
Try a Jaguar, heavier strings play easier, and I was a Gretsch man.
Moving from the '67 Anniversary and the 6120 to a Jaguar just felt
right.

Is the Jag a versatile guitar? If I do a cheesy money gig will I be able to play
all different rock styles on it like a Strat? I must say, I sure love the Jag's
surf look!

Define cheesy :) If your going to need something to play Deep
Purple and SRV/Clapton leads then go with the Strat. But, if you go
with the Strat and you have to play that kind of music wouldn't you
need really light strings? Remember your surf guitar should have
heavy flats on it, are you going to want to take your strings off
for a cheesy gig? Why not buy a cheesy cheap guitar for that
stuff? :)
The Jag is excellent with flats. The 12s on mine feel like 11s on a
Strat, plus I get that thick tone you only get with heavy strings.
I use my Jaguar for rockabilly "lead guitar" Listen to Evan Foster
of the Boss Martians he played the hell out of his Jaguar. I don't
think there's anything you can or cannot do on certain guitars. You
just have to see how they feel to you.

I play a strat, but I also think that you can play a jag for whatever
you want. The guitarists from soundgarden and red hot chili peppers
have used jags a lot and they play different kinds of music other than
surf. I use my strat for surf (I use a jazzmaster too), and I use
round 12's (I use flats on the jazz). It depends on what kind of surf
sound you are going for. Dick Dale, The Space Cossacks, The Atlantics,
and a lot of others have used strats for surf. Clapton and SRV
don't/didn't use light strings. I think SRV used 14's, not sure though.

Good points, let me just add. Clapton currently uses 10s or 9s now
on his Stratocasters, I'm sure this will offend someone here but
current Clapton would fit my definition of "cheesy" music. Before
you Clapton lovers jump on my back, I know his stuff probably better
than most and saw him his last times through Chicago. For SRV,
I've read that he cheated sometimes and would substitute lighters
strings. You ask how does a guy who dislikes these musicians know
so much about them? Ever been bored and had nothing to read except
a Guitar Player magazine? Every other issue breaks down SRV,
Hendrix, or Clapton's gear!
Back to the original poster, he said he played a Gretsch. So, I'm
doubting he's a big time shredder.

I played one of SRV's guitars once. It had 13's and some high action. At the
time I thought it was like playing on telephone cables. A friend of mine aquired
guitars for the Hard Rock Cafe and that's how I got to fondle it.

Clapton uses 9s these days. He uses 12s on his acoustics. They are
breaking down Clapton's gear less these days. Clapton has become
"dull" in the gear he uses. Clapton is down to a Strat through one of
those new Fender Custom Shop Twins through a chorus pedal and since he
had the TBX circuit taken out of his guitar a Tube Screamer. And a Wah
pedal of course. The chorus is only used on Badge. This was all in an
issue of some random guitar magazine I read in an airport the summer
before last. In Chicago Bill will be proud to know. I don't think
Clapton is caring much for gear these days.
I love Derek and the Dominos. Clapton at his best.
When I was younger I always wanted to hear a Clapton surf album. He
has written some great melodies over the years. His solo in Bob
Dylan's 30 anniversary on "My Back Pages" will always be one of my
favorites. He can afford the gear I am sure.
Clapton did crap in the late '70s and '80s.

Play what sounds good to your ear and feels good on your fingers. I believe
Dano from the NEB's posted last year that he liked Gibson fat strings for
two or three reasons. I took his advice a put some on my Jazzmaster and
loved them.I own three strats and have everything from 9's to flat wound
11's on them. They all sound great to my ear but I have found those heavier
strings are hard on strat necks (tuning problems!). Strings are pretty cheap
when you get down to it, so try differnt stuff out.
Now my two cents on what Bill said about Clapton. NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR YOUR
MUSIC INFLUENCES OR TASTES!!!! I joined this group because I have a great
love and passion for surf/insto music. I like to read all of your posts and
all of you have been very helpful at one time or another. My favorite
artist,Bruce Springsteen. My three favorite guitar players, Ry Cooder,Duane
Allman,Jimi Hendrix.Haven't heard too much surf music from them over the
years! Point being music seems to be one of the only and last forms of free
speech we have left anymore.Listen to everything you can. So what if Clapton
went in a different direction. He has to make a living too. I'm 50 years old
and have a very diverse music collection. ALL OF IT HAS INFLUENCED MY
PLAYING! From Segovia to Motown,Zepplin and Zappa.Neil Young,Eddie Angel,and
Charlie Christian. They all bring something to the table. Don't be afraid to
say you listen to something cause your only cheating yourself!
Nuff Said and Mahalo to All of You
