Re: THE BAHAREBAS( more importantly the Nocturnes)

Jeff (bigtikidude) - 22 Apr 2005 20:10:55

-Daniel,-
Ask Ivan from the Space Cossacks/Madera.
He loved the Nocturnes as well. They covered "3rd star to the left"
onthe first cd. They did "Space Probe" the Chantays song on a split
45 with the Fathoms, but they did the Nocturnes Version.
And For the Ventures Tribute cd, The Cossacks covered the Nocturnes
version of "Journey to the Stars"
Then to top it off, on the 2nd cd Ivan and Jim Frias of the Nocturnes
co-wrote "Beyond the 3rd Star"
The Nocturnes do have a few new rippin surf songs on a cd.
But for the most part when they play live they rely on alot of covers,
and Bad(vocal wise) versions of Jan and Dean , and Beach Boys songs.
If your gonna do those, you have to nail them, and they don't.
Then to add insul to injury, they do "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"
and "Rockin' Robbin" that's when I start looing around for
someplace to eat, or go sit and talk to somebody.

For those who don't know, Bruce McCoy, the original drummer in the
Nocturnes, plays lead guitar in the surf band The Breakaways. He's a
killer drummer, and a great guitarist. I've emailed with him a few
times and he still has the Ludwig kit that he used back then.

Shawn-
I'm gonna see the Breakaways this Sun. with Marty's bandd the
Fabulous Planktones.
The Breakaways do mostly 60's instro covers, but also have some
killer originals too. Bruce writes some good stuff when he wants to.
