Baha-Ree-Bah (Part 1) - The Trademarks

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 21 Apr 2005 19:38:14

Does anyone else think this is close to being the greatest song ever?
I go through phases on which song is my favorite, and this one is
stuck in my head and won't leave. Who the hell were these guys? The
song is just so dead on killer, so pumped up and energetic...both the
lead and rhythm guitars, the drumming, the bass...wow...I think this
is one of those rare songs that the original version still trumps all
the covers that came after it. The bleating sax is even kind of cool.
The rhythm section is very tight and really drives this song along.
Laika & The Cosmonauts and The Apemen covered it. I know lots of
others have too...who am I missing?
I think The Trademarks are profiled in "Surfin' Guitars", I'll have to
go re-read that.
I understand Part 2 is on the B-side and isn't all that great, but
I've never heard it. I found it on that weird "Get a Board"
compilation on Satan Records. That comp has some gems on it, and a
*lot* of junk. Still, get it for this song, Morpheous by The Toads
(covered by Satan's Pilgrims and The Nebulas), and Time Bomb by The
Avengers VI.

Brian,
The Original is definetly(sp?) a must have.
But for my money, The Nocturnes ripped it up quite well too.
I and many other people were blown away by them when they Opened with
this at the First Rendevous Reunion.

Cool! Didn't they do a Baha-Ree-Bah 2000 remake too? I've never heard
that. I really liked what little Nocturnes stuff from the 60's I have
heard. Is there a CD or comp with some Nocturnes material on it?
Aren't they on one of those "Rare Surf: South Bay Bands" comps? Isn't
that kind of hard to find nowadays?

Yeah, the Nocturnes version is on Rare Surf Vol. 2. I've been
learning all Larry Carlton's leads on the Wheely McSidewalk stuff,
and Baha-Ree-Bah
and the rest of the Nocturnes stuff still blows me away. Their lead
guitarist was 14 at the time!

I've got Rare surf volume 2 and the Nocturnes Baha Ree Ba just blew
me away. It has an intensity of a punk song and the grove of the
gods. I play it for the guys at work and they just stare at me like a
mental. Those who have eyes but refuse to see.Miller

Brian - the Nocturnes stuff is all a must have - the 3-disc Rare Surf series
was repackaged as a two disc set called American Surf Treasures I & II a
few years ago on the Gee Dee label. I believe I bought mine from Paul
Johnson's site

Thanks Jim! Yeah, he's got it alright. I've been meaning to pick up
the Volcanic Action CD also (the song of the same name is so
incredibly essential to surf...it sounds so damn authentic!). Cool!

Yeah, definitely one of the greatest surf instros ever! As for Part
2, I agree it isn't on the same level (includes more sax and less
shouting and sounds more pedestrian).

I don't think I ever have heard a 1st wave surf tune been covered
better than any original version...

What?!? "Get A Board" is one of the best overall surf comps ever!
(and I have quite a few great surf comps to compare with). Especially
the CD version which also includes the equally great "Wail On The
Beach" comp.

Actually Rare Surf vol. 1 and 2 are identical to American Surf
Treasures vol. 1 and 2. None of the stuff from Rare Surf vol. 3 were
included on the two Gee Dee releases.

The Rare Surf cds show up on Ebay fairly often as well. I can't
remember if I got mine there or on Amazon. Volume 2 w/the Nocturnes
is the best disc IMHO

Life is short. Play for the music. Wear your heart on your sleeve.

What?!? LOL. I guess we will disagree on this one. I think its
pretty weak with a few gems. I suspect it's the vocals that is
causing our differences. I rarely like vocals in surf...I can enjoy
The Trashmen vocal songs, but other vocals cause me to scramble for
the "next track" button. :-) But even the vocals on this comp are
pretty bad, IMHO.
There is one song on "Get A Board" where a DJ basically talks (not
sings, talks) over the music from "Movin'", and half the lyrics are
stolen from "Hot Rod Lincoln". But yet he takes full writing credit!
Talk about cashing in!

Yeah, I also click my many of the vocals on "Get A Board" but not all. I
actually like that title track with the DJ and I knew I was in real trouble when
I came away singin' to myself, "Boys aren't allowed on Surf Bunny Beach".

Hehe Brian, I suspected that was the case too. But again, I can't

surf vocals, there are still about 15 great instros on it.

The Surf Raiders and the Incredible Sucking Spongies
also covered it.
The B side is a continuation - basically the two sides
sound like they are edits of one performance.
