Re: [SurfGuitar101] Re: Tube vs. Solid State - anyone have HotRod Deville?

Richard (errant_jedi) - 25 Sep 2002 08:56:08

It was some guy in a music store around here...metal
head. I've heard from him and another friend of mine
that distortion will eventually blow the tubes in the
amp and that I'll be constantly replacing tubes if I
try to play distortion through it. There's a really
sweet looking Hot Rod Deville in the local music store
here in Athens, GA for a real decent price and I was
thinking of trying it out. Anybody own one of these?

of course, there are no metal guitarists that play through cranked up
Marshall tube amps! they don't exist! and Jimi Hendrix is just a figment of
our collective imagination.
this guy probably should have his heads examined (his marshall's as well as
own)

I used to, and I'm still sad that I sold it six years ago. Which is it,
the 2x12 or 4x10 (the one I had)?
They are a great, verstile, general purpose retroish amp with a great
sound. You should try it out, and see if it fits what you're looking
for. They do have a classic spring reverb unit in them, and are all
tube, so they sound big and warm and great.
Now, I also play blues, so it was a great amp for rock-surf-blues; it
might not give you the 'classic' tone you are looking for, for it's not
dead-on to the old sound, but if you're looking for something that will
work and sound good for a wide range of music it's a great way to go.

Metal Head? Figures. Anyway, get the DeVille: Lots of headroom, versatile. I own
a HRDV 410, and I think even Dick Dale would approve of the volume this amp can
produce :) Lots of stuff about this amp, and many others on www.fenderforum.com
- a great resource. Surfy amps are generally Fender, powerful, clean, and with
lots of headroom. Let us know what you end up with.
Best wishes,
Brad

I have the 2x12" Hot Rod DeVille. Like the others have said this is a good
value. Its VERY loud for 60 Watts and can stay nice and clean at high volume
on the clean channel. It has a pretty good spring reverb, although it is NOT
tube driven. But, I have a stand alone reverb unit, and that makes a pretty
damn good combo. It is probably too big for my basement playing, but I hope
to play out someday.
My only problem with it is that the power tubes rattle at even moderate
volume. I've been advised to replace them to fix that.
Good luck,
BN
