1) Vinatge Fender Showman w/ outboard Fender Reverb Unit
2) Vintage Fender Bassman w/ outboard Fender Reverb Unit
Personally, I have owned both, and I like the Bassman
better...beefier tone...better performance and reliability.

I'm a Bandmaster man, I've used our bassist's Dual Showman, and
really didn't need THAT much power. There's nothing we've played
that the Bandmaster couldn't handle. 40watts with a solid state
rectifier must not break up as much as the 40watts with a tube
rectifier, which is what my Super Reverb was. Man, that thing got
dirty around 5. Oh, and the 2x12 cab is easier to carry around.

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 21 Apr 2005 17:19:27

I have a Twin Reverb Special 15, basically a Twin with a single 15" JBL-type
speaker. Seems
to me it about nails the tone and wiring scheme of an early Fender Showman with
reverb
in a single-cab. The open back does make it a bit less boomy, and the treble is
a bit
glassy. But it is really good for clean, bright sound - if that is what you like
in your surfin'.
Has more bottom end than a standard Twin and a very nice, tight sound.
Can't say if it is "the best" but it does have a place among the front runners.

Has anyone tried the "reissue" '59 Bassman?

I don't know if it's the best but I just had my '63 Fender Tremolux overhauled
and it now has tone galore with lots of volume. Just killer with my tank.
Cheers

I have...it's smooth...I like it best for guitar...kind of
weak and lame for bass, though.

There used to be a 59 Bassman re-issue in the rehearsal space we
used for a while... it broke up way too easily to be very effective
for surf, IMHO, but then, my main amp at the time was a Twin Reverb,
which made most other amps seem totally dirty by comparison.
