Re: 666 members (Satan's Pilgrims)/Satans

Daniel Kubon (fuzznsurf) - 21 Apr 2005 02:12:31

yep cool story ! for me as a german, its hard to imagine that a
bandname can causes such problems [posters etc.] .but who knows how the
future will look like in germany with Benedikt 16th as mainman for the
catholics. damn....
i found the satans single at gemm music, but the price is made for "7
inch collectors only" [12 $] I think...anyway heres the link

I joined the group yesterday morning, so I may be number 666.
Does that make me the "Anti-Surfer?"
What am I listening to? In the car, Satan's Pilgrims, the Insect
Surfers, Surf Coasters, Lost Legends of Surf Guitar. At home,
Jon and the Nightriders, "Surf Beat '80," on vinyl. Remember
turntables?

Steve, your post reminds me of a great lyric I heard the other day,
"Sometimes I'm up,
sometimes I'm down,
other times I'm probably found,
between a pair of huge,
speakers pushed by vacuum tubes"
Now that's a lyric! It's by a group called The Features that Jonesy (Sex Pistol
Steve Jones now a DJ) played.

Surely everyone on the list owns a turntable?!? Anyone who don't
misses out on many great surf recordings only available on vinyl.

I have a turn table as well. I can't say I have very much surf on
vinyl. I have a couple hundred records otherwise. I'm 21 and from
Seattle so my collection is limited by my age and location. I have
managed to pick up Live From the Whisky by Jon and the Nightriders,
Both the Space Cossacks albums, Sonic Bullets by the Bambi Molesters,
6 Ventures albums, my favorite being Telstar and the TV Themes one. I
also own a dozen or so surf singles. Those include Boss Martians,
Penetrators, Slacktone, Tornadoes, Nebulas, Ventures, and others. I
want to get the Cossacks and Fathoms split and their other 45. I am
depressed I can post my entire collection in a short paragraph.

Just keep your eyes open. I know I haven't lived there for awhile, but
I found a lot of surf/instrumental in Oregon and Washington. You
should be able to get almost all of the Ventures stuff for $5 and
under at garage sales and even some used record stores. If you're ever
in Portland try Jackpot Records and 2nd Avenue Records. They cater to
the garage/surf 60s geeks and keep the prices fairly reasonable.
They'll at least have the Surfer's Mood type comps, and Del-Fi
reissues from the 90s. Some of my surf/inst. vinyl garage sale finds
in the NW include the Blues Theme album, Akii Aleong and the Nobles,
Jerry Cole and His Spacemen, Surfaris Wipe Out (of course) and Hit
City '65, Surfin' with the Astronauts, Jack Neitzche's Lonely Surfer,
both Hondells albums, Silly Surfers...Lots of Ventures, Wailers, Beach
Boys, and Jan & Dean too-but I can't talk about those here (ha). It's
weird, once you find one, the rest seem to come to you after that.
Good luck, it's worth it.

Tell me about it, I don't own a vinyl player, but I picked up two Galaxy
Trio 45's years ago, and had never listened to them until about a week ago
when I found a place that transfered them to a cd. Sad but true, I never was
big into vinyl. there is so much more out there, that I haven't been able
to listen to because of this.

Jacob,
I forgot to mention thrift stores too! Especially if your band
travels, hit up thrift stores in towns like Longview, Ellensburg,
Moses Lake, even Tacoma, WA and Salem, Grants Pass (I found Bob Vaught
and the Renegaids here), and Medford OR.
On a similar note, here's what really strnage to me about the 00s,
being a vinyl guy. Our Estrus cds are fetching $25-40 on ebay and
amazon (crazy), while the vinyl versions are still plentiful and going
for a whopping $9.98 direct from Estrus.
OK I'll shut up now.

We've done Bellingham a couple of times. I was disappointed that I
didn't find very much surf up there. I found one Boss Martians 45.
When I mentioned surf up there they said "oh like Man or Astro-Man? or
Satan's Pilgrims?". They definately know there surf up there but there
seems to be no albums. I was in Ellensburg and Moses Lake this summer
and their Thrift Stores had nothing good. I always look through every
record at thrift stores. Golden Oldies in Seattle is good. And there
are some places in Freemont, Seattle as well.

I dig the vinyl. I think BRAND new vinyl sounds better than CD, but
once you start playing it it losses quality right off the bat. CD's
are more practical when it comes to learning songs, and trying to pick
up guitar lines. However, I enjoy listening to vinyl when I'm
just "listening" because you have to actually get up and turn it over!
So, I don't think i could live with out a record player, unfortunatly
I have trouble finding needles now.
Anyone know of any cool places in Chicago that sell "surf" vinyl?
Thanks to Jacob I found a pretty cool Eddie and the SNOWMEN EP on Ebay.

Now that doesn't make sense, Bill. If you enjoy just listening, then having to
get up to turn over the lp is an interuption to just listening. I like that the
CD player turns it over for ya, that's much more condusive to just listening.
And it's especially great that 2 lp sets can fit on one CD.
I do still love my vinyl though. The main reason is the large album covers where
one can actually read the liner notes.

The problem is a lot of double LPs are made into 2 CDs and cost twice
as much. All the Beatles and Dylan double LPs are proof of this.
Nowdays they don't charge $10 more for an extra disc.
I like having to treat the vinyl nicely. They always get picked up
unlike my CDs. I have 50 or so surf CDs to my right laying on the
ground. Some in cases some not in cases. And their nice big piles got
knocked over.

Your really looking at the half empty glass there Jacob. It is true that a few
double lp's are made into double CD's BUT many more classic double albums and
would-have-been double albums are made into single CD's. For instance, those
"Get A Board" and "Rare Surf" comps that folks were talking about today each
have 24 or more songs on 'em. If they tried to squeeze those 24+ tracks on to
vinyl, they would have to reduce the volume and compress 'em too much.
Some say the glass is half empty, some say the glass is half full. I say the
glass is too big.

I have noticed that now days most double LPs are getting single CD
treatment. If only it weren't for those damn Dylan and Beatles albums.
I believe the Who has some like that as well.
Surf is really good about making the double LPs onto one CD. There
aren't many double LPs but they will put two albums by the same band
on plus singles. Doesn't mean I can't be bitter about my not being
able to get the White Album or Quadrophenia because it is so
exspensive. But that is why I own them on LP.

NONE of my vinyl is surf. I got into surf in the 90s and out of record
collecting. I like the convenience of CDs.

i like both. cd`s are easier to handle and mostly cheaper than most of
the "vintage" vinyl. 7 inches are cool for DJing, but at home it sucks
to flip the record after 1 or 2 songs. LPs have a more voluminous sound
(my objective notice) and the artwork looks better. I want the best of
both worlds and so I have a cd player and record player.
audiophile greetings,

Oh yes, I do love those surf twofers you speak of. I have quite a few. One Way
and See For Miles put out almost every Ventures album on twofers a few years
ago. They're outta print now and some are starting to creep up in price.
It is unfortunate that the White Album, Quadrophenia and Blonde on Blonde are
each too long to fit on one CD. They did get Tommy onto a single disk. It's nice
to be able to hear that one straight through.
