Hello Good People,
I am looking for a good mic for home recording.
Essentially I need it to mic my guitar (played through
an old Rickenbacker amp and Fender solid state Reverb
unit) and bass (played through a shitty Danelectro
practice amp). Eventually I'd also like to mic live
drums. I've been recording synthesizers directly into
my Portastudio, but would like to add a little surf
into the mix. You guys know of any good, and
preferably reasonably priced microphones that will
suffice?

Philippe,
When in doubt, buy a Sure SM-57. They're the most widely used
instrument mic anywhere. Any music store should have them, they more
often than not run for under $100 bucks, and you can usually get them
in a cheap package deal with a chord and boom mic stand. My drummer
uses one if he does overheads, or on his snare for close micing. I
personally use an ooooolllld Sure Paging microphone that I scored
free from an old Engineering shop, or an EV paging mic I picked up at
a swap meet for $3 and a can of coke.
Basically, go for what will get you a good range of frequencies, and
I say stick with Sure, since I've never been let down by one of their
mics.
