What are you listening to?

Brian Neal (xarxas) - 18 Apr 2005 18:21:16

Well we haven't done this in a while, so we are overdue. Got anything
new you are listening to?
I somewhat recently picked up The Wet Tones "Mucho Reverbo", I think I
mentioned this...very good trad sounding stuff. Jag tone and reverb to
the max. And also The 50 Foot Combo's "Go Hunting", also very good.
The 50 footers have a unique sound, I think they must have an extra
percussion player...it adds a lot. They have a very garagey sound and
some songs feature some sick fuzz.
The new live Slacktone is really awesome.
I've also been listening to a lot of old 60's surf. Great stuff; good
to go back to the beginning.
Still listening to The Treble Spankers and The Beat Tornados to get
the Euro/Scando take on surf... (so did we decide that Norway is in
Europe or Scandinavia?? <ducking under desk>)
And I was VERY LUCKY and scored a copy of John & The Nightriders
"Banished To The Beach" compilation of 80's stuff on CD. AWESOME!
And, all the talk about the Ghastly Ones and Satan's Pilgrims has me
going back to these perennial favorites.
I still like the new Bitch Boys "Ride The First Wave".
Anyway, I am itching to pick up something new and was fishing for
ideas....so, whaddya got?
Thanks,
BN

Alright Brian, I'll play your game, I need a break anyway.
I spend about 2 hours a day in the car. So I'm ALWAYS rotating CDS,
I really don't have time to just sit around the house and listen to
surf albums! In my car right now...
"A Haunting We Will Go, the Ghastly Ones"
"Rare Surf Vol. 2 the South Bay Bands" This one is also on my stereo
in my studio, trying to figure out those Wheely McSidewalk(Larry
Carlton)leads. I dig the Nocturne stuff as well.
"The Phantom Surfers the Great Surf Crash of '97"
"Quarter Mile; Surfers Deal, The Daytonas"
"Let's Go, the Ventures"

Lots of Surf Coasters for me.
Got Soul Pilgrim and a non-burned copy of Around the World With.. the
other day.
I got the Bombora's Head Shrinkin' Fun and I don't care much for it.
The Bambi Molester always get my love
and Slacktone is alway in my mind.
I also scored Banished to the Beach and Live at the Whisky.
I recently bought, and it hasn't arrived, The Finks, New Dimensions,
Pollo Del Mar(two albums), Surface Impression by the Surf Coasters($12
off of ebay), and some others. I think.

Did the Surf Coasters record every show?
And the new U2 album is a nice sonic treat. Not their best but good.

I love, LOVE that album!!! Jacob, definitely give it more of a
chance. Not the most melodic band around, but on that album there
are some songs where these guys just GO OFF!! Some of the highest-
energy surf music ever, I think.

I'm trying to remember how much I paid for it. Oh yeah, $12.
Another copy ended on ebay on Saturday. I tried to get that as well.
Pipeline magazine jacked the price up. I am really looking for Surf is
Dead since it doesn't appear it can be bought on any of the sites. I
am looking to buy off of Amazon.co.jp soon. They have great prices as
does CDJapan.co.jp. I don't know who I'll order from yet. Surfdelic,
Surf Attack and two others are next. Propably self titled and Easter.
Who knows.

Yeah, me too. A few years ago I knew nothing about The Bomboras, just
people raving about them on Cowabunga. Imagine my surprise when I
found "Head Shrinkin' Fun" at a used CD store over lunch one day. I
think I paid 5 or 6 bucks for it. Boy did that make my day. There is
some great stuff on there! Definitely give it another listen. When you
get all those guys with their guitars, organs, and drums pointed in
the right direction...look out! That's some crazy, wild ass stuff there!

Brian and me - separated at birth?? ;)
I have to say also that I think Dave Klein is probably one of the
VERY best drummers in the nineties surf, and definitely the most
underrated. When I listen to him I often find myself thinking that I
like hearing this guy playing surf even more than Dusty! He's got a
more traditional style than Dusty and he's heavy on the snare, which
I'm crazy about. And he's just freakin' explosive!!
Long live Dave Klein!

I still plan to get the other Bombora albums. It wasn't terrible.
Didn't really care for the vocal numbers. To me Man or Astro-Man?
holds a monopoly on the good vocal instrumental surf tunes. And I got
a Finks album which hasn't came. Members of the Finks became the Bomboras?
Speaking of Man or Astro-Man? vocal numbers. I just love Mermaid Love.
What an amazing song.

I agree with what Brian and Ivan are saying here about Head
Shrinkin' Fun. Jacob, listen to it again man!
I spoke with Gregg recently, he actually gave us a really cool
review of our album, so it's always nice to hear that from people
you've looked up to. To go along with what Ivan and Brian are
trying to get across about the Bomboras(I think)...they were REALLY
explosive and full of energy, but in more of a traditional sense
than someone like Slacktone or the Surf Coasters, which are two
bands I'm sure a lot here would say are full of energy.
When I spoke with Gregg, he said Organ Grinder was his favorite
album, and I have to agree. The vocals on that album are REALLY
great. But he did say overall he wasn't very happy with their
sounds in the studio, and thought they were a much better live
band. I would have enjoyed seeing these guys live. Gregg got a
great sound from his Stratocaster BTW.

>>Members of the Finks became the Bomboras?
You bet they did. The others went on to the Huntington Cads. I've
read a few interviews and it seems like there was a little feud or
something. The Bomboras made a remark that they had the "up-up" sound
because they played REALLY loud, and the Huntington Cads had the "down-
down" sound because they played very quite. IMO the Bomboras were a
better band.

Jake is currently in Lords of Altamont and I think he was also in The
Invisible Men. I know at least one of the Bomboras was. There was also
Lord Hunt and his Missing Finks, a small side project. I don't know much
about that one, except I think Jake and Dave were in that too, but
someone feel free to add to that. Before the Finks were the
Witchdoctors, which were more garage and fuzz. I forget which
Finks/Bomboras members were in that band. The Headless Hearsemen sound
like the Witchdoctors.

I have the KFJC, and Las Vegas shows. I also have the Blank from last
year. Rev Willis recorded that one. I want to find his e-mail to see
if I can get the other shows he recorded from him. I don't have
anything to trade though. I also noticed he had a Space Cossacks show
from 1997 or 98. Maybe I could trade him a bootleg of our first show.
