-DP, All,
answers to questions below.
1. I would assume the money. But I know he wasn't happy with Dick,
talkin smack on Dusty by saying he couldn't find a drummer to play
the way he wanted/take directions/play "on the 1's ".Then saying
until he put Jimmy behind the kit. Jimmy is good for 13, but he's no
great drummer, and no Dusty for sure.
2.I believe there was a guy that Dusty had got to fill his spot
before he left. But for some reason, he didn't play with Dick on the
show on Sat.
3. The Funny thing is Sam was on Bass, and Ron Sat in on rhythm
guitar. Also sat in for Jim Pash in the Surfaris. But he's been
doin' R & B music and soundtrack work I heard.
4. Seems like it, playing guitar and drums, I'm wonderin' when
he's gonna do bass also?
Side Note: Slacktone wiped the floor with Dick. Dave wasn't going
to do Miserlou, But we were all yelling for them to do it.
Dick was inthe house while they were playing(I was surprised). But
when they started it, he left to go outside while they played it.
Tooo funny, that guy is a total asshole.
as Billy Blast off pointed out, all the bands but Slacktone were
listed on Dicks web site for the event.

Thanks for the report. That is one of the greatest testaments to
Slacktone's greatness. The King of the Surf Guitar won't acknowledge
one of the several actual kings of the surf guitar. Do you know if
Dick came out to see the Surf Coasters? I am bummed that Shigeo goes
by Prince of the Surf Guitar. He should be Emperor of Surf Guitar.
Slacktone's Misirlou is amazing. I love the Surf Coasters as well but
I have to give it to Slacktone's current version of the tune.
I was thinking yesterday about the whole King of the Surf Guitar
title. What we need is a system of government that doesn't have a
single head of state. Or atleast a representative body that could
include all the great players while not making one guy above everyone
else. It could be the Senate of Surf Guitar.

-Jacob,
Dick didn't come to any of the LA or San Diego shows for the surf
coasters. That I know of he doesn't listen to or go see any bands
play. Usually he hides in his back stage room or outside in the RV
while the other bands play. Then he comes in after all his stuff is
ready and plays. I was really suprised to see him come in halfway
thru Slacktones set. He didn't really seem to notice or look at
them. Everybody(lots of older people) were running over to
hug/shake his hand/and say hi to him. So he was pretty tied up in
that to watch. But after a few minutes he went back to the back of
the room with his wife, Jimmy and a bunch of Jimmys friends, and sat
down at a table. When we talked Slacktone into doing Miserlou, I
had to see Dicks reaction. So I non chalauntly (sp?) went walking
towards the back of the room. And Noticed that he wasn't there any
more. He had to have ran out the back door when they started it.
I was near the stage, and he didn't walk passed to go to the restroom.
I'd love to ask him face to face about. But I'll just let him be #1
in his own mind.

I dunno, I think you're being a little hard on Dick. Didn't he invent the style
that Slacktone plays? To be honest, I've never heard a full song of their's,
only the sound bytes on their site, and it sounds awesome, but if they were
around in the late 50's and early 60's, do you think that they would have been
playing stuff like their version of Miserlou without Dick's influence?
As far as leaving the room when Slacktone played Miserlou, the last thing that a
headliner needs to hear before going on is the opening act playing one of the
headliners songs, whether it's a better version or not. I checked out
Slacktone's Miserlou video on their site and apart from the open-string stuff
intro, IMHO it's pretty much Dick's version, not exactly, but close enough. Even
the glissandos seem to be in the same spots as Dick's version.
When you take Dick's age into consideration, as well as his huge influence, I
think he's allowed to have an ego and attitude. Anyway, that's my take on it. I
don't personally know Dick or Dave so I can only speculate.
Cheers

I could care less if Dick Dale invented surf. I like his earlier stuff
but just because he was the first is no reason to elevate him to god
status. Slacktone is quite different from Dick Dale. Sure they
wouldn't sound the same without Dick but they don't rip stuff off of
Dick. Slacktone's version of Misirlou is quite different. Note all the
extra chords dave throws in. Play Dick's version back to back with theirs.
Dick's ego and attitude come from the wrong place in this case.

I've seen Dick Dale play live several times. I've seen Slacktone play live
several times. Last Saturday, I saw Dick Dale and Slacktone play live on the
same stage. I saw Dick put his tail between his legs................
Have a nice day.

I think the important thing is that Dick Dale showed up in support of
Jim Pash. As did everyone else who played.
I assume that anyone who reads this (and hasn't already) can find a
way to make some kind of donation to help out. I got this off Mach
Turtle Productions:
"To make donations go to www.mickeyrooneyjr.com
Specify donation to Jim Pash
The Lord's Link Ministry is a tax deductible, non-profit organization"
The guy needs a new liver.
Hear Hear Dan!
Nothing against Dave Wronski as a guitarist, but one has to wonder at the
"class" and judgment of stepping on DD's toes, playing DD's most famous
signature song, when DD is following Slacktone!
If Longboard Ranch was opening for DD, we would absolutely NOT play a DD song in
our set! That would be totally T-A-C-K-Y IMHO. And, if I were DD, I'd have
walked out also!

don't personally know Dick or Dave so I can only speculate.

Except the fans demanded Slacktone play Misirlou because they enjoy it
so much more than Dick Dale's version.

Tough call there, was Dick Dale the actual headliner? If so, I'd be
pissed. If I was the headliner and someone played my biggest song?
That wouldn't be too cool. So I think I'm on Dan and Bruce's side.
For the record, I prefer Dick's version to Slacktone's live version
I've seen.
Bill
Aren't we jumping to conclusions here? Maybe Dick had to go outside to
talk to someone or something. Dick is kind of "different", but the guy
laid down the law back in the day and you can't take that away from
him. As a fan, I would love to hear *both* Slacktone and DD play
Misirlou on the same night. They do it differently enough.
Dick is kind of like a loopy but lovable grandpa...people like to rip
on him but we would all miss him if he retired. Besides, you gotta go
see him at least once...have you seen him play Jacob? I got to only 2
years ago, and he definitely had the tone and chops...and that *sound*
coming out of the Showmans was pure power. Never mind the trumpet
noodling and Smoke on the Water, etc. I was mesmerized while he did
his surf stuff (but sadly only in medley form). I've said this many
times, but I would love to see Dick with a rhythm guitar player and
playing full versions of his surf songs.
I have heard that Dusty didn't get along with DD, or maybe he just got
tired of the gig, but he says nothing but positive things about DD on
his website and on the various lists. It does seem kind of odd that
Slacktone would play that song before DD, but what are you going to do
when the fans are screaming for it? Did they at least dedicate it to him?
Anyway, no one (Jeff?) has posted what other "shit" went down at that
gig. How were the other bands? Was Willy Glover at this gig too?
BN
Sorry, but I'll analogize by slipping other band's names in place of Dick Dale:
Despite clamorous requests, if we were on stage before:
The Ventures - we would refuse requests to play Walk Don't Run;
The Lively Ones - we would refuse requests to play High Tide/Tranquilizer
The Surfaris - we would refuse requests to play Wipe Out
The Chantays - we would refuse requests to play Pipeline
etc. etc. etc.
Respect is a sadly rare commodity these days, and as far as I'm concerned, Dick
Dale has earned enough of my respect that I would have answered the audience
requests, (had I been Dave Wronski) by saying that out of respect and homage to
"The King of Surf Guitar" we would refrain from playing his signature song,
knowing it would be inevitably part of his set!
Seems all too obvious to me, but I'm a traditionalist, steeped in respect for
those who went before, and who helped design and define this wonderful genre of
Surf Music. I guess my ethics are inconveniently old-fashioned for some of
y'all!

Wow. I guess we think the opposite Bruce.
If another band played one of my tunes, (especially a band of that caliber), I'd
be flattered, and then I'd probably jump on stage with them. But that's
me.......

Yeah, maybe, *given* that this is a special benefit for Jim Pash, and
not a regular gig. So in the spirit of things I can see that. Still it
does seem odd that they would play Misirlou...but man, wouldn't that
have been something if DD joined Slacktone on stage? WOW.
However, I wasn't there so I won't judge the mood or the situation
from 1,000 miles away.

Dick didn't exactly write Misirlou either. Granted he popularized it
and his arrangement is the basis for most other arrangements.
Slacktone is considered by many to be in the top echelon of surf bands
and do what many consider to be the best version of Misirlou. Like it
or not that would be what I consider the majorities opinion.
I'm sure Slacktone wouldn't have minded if Dick played The Bells of
St. Kahuna.
And kudos to Slacktone for playing for the crowd. The have a devoted
following. You don't play for the other musicians on the bill.

I'm more in sync with your view on this, Brian. In fact, I don't really care if
Dick was dis'ing Slacktone or not, nor do I care whatever kinda Bozo stuff he
does these days, this whole surf music scene would be a very different animal
had DD not put a fire under it the way he did in the early '60's.

Yeah man, I'm gonna play "Walk Don't Run" and blow the Ventures off the stage
when I warm up for them!
But seriously folks, I know Dave and Dusty have good heads on their shoulders
and have great respect for Dick Dale. They wouldn't play Miserlou to show him
up. I'm sure they played it as tribute and because the fans twisted their arms
and not because the fans enjoy it so much more. I for one love both versions.

Except the fans demanded Slacktone play Misirlou because they enjoy it

I think the important thing is that Dick Dale showed up in support of
Jim Pash. As did everyone else who played.
I assume that anyone who reads this (and hasn't already) can find a
way to make some kind of donation to help out. I got this off Mach
Turtle Productions:
"To make donations go to www.mickeyrooneyjr.com
Specify donation to Jim Pash
The Lord's Link Ministry is a tax deductible, non-profit organization"
The guy needs a new liver.

See, the fact is that Dick Dale is Dick Dale. His idiosyncracies are legendary
and very well-known. He used to tell venues that he would not play if another
Instro Surf Band was going on before him - He didn't want the audience's
attention for his music diluted in any way at all.
This has never been a secret, and of all people, Dave W oughta have been
extremely aware of this. I come back to the issue of respect. If I heard Dick
Dale playing one of our songs, yes, I'd be totally flattered and stoked! But
for ME to presume to perform Dick's #1 SIGNATURE SONG, prior to Dick himself
getting on stage - SORRY, I find that inexcusably unprofessional and
disrepectful. Like I said, younger folk just ain't got the same level of
artistic ethics these days!
