Dicky cracks me up.

billyblastoff805 - 11 Apr 2005 23:34:47

If you go to Dick's web-site, he fails to mention a very important ingredient to
the whole Jim Pash, Surfaris' gig..............Slacktone!!
Probably cause he realizes he's gonna get his ass kicked!
See you there.

If I may be so bold as to say I feel Slackton is greater than Dick
Dale. And especially at this point in Dick's career. Is Dave going to
show Dick up with Misirlou? Dave plays it so much better.

Seeing that Dick Dale was recently 2/3 of Slacktone I'd have to agree
here. I don't like anything I've hard of Dick Dale lately. I would
disagree that Slacktone is greater than Dick Dale WAS. Was is the key
word here, I just got all his early albums on vinyl and it's all
excellent. I even like the vocal tracks. Why won't you rerelease
this stuff Dick?

Sure better technicians come around in the years that follow but who created
the genre? Who was it who first played that high energy version bluegrass
defining version of Blue Moon of Kentucky? Who was it who first played that high
energy surf-instro defining version of Miserlou? Bill Monroe invented Blue
Grass. Dick Dale invented high energy surf. I don't care what kinda
bigger-than-life stories Dick likes to tell now, those sort of musical genre
inventions are mammoth accomplishments that come from very few musicians.

Here here! Besides the vocals part (can you really get excited about
Mama's Gone Surfin'? Yikes! :), I'll wholeheartedly agree with Bill.
There are so many buried diamonds on those albums that many surf
music fans never heard, it's really sad. For example, Mexico is one
of DD's finest instros and it has never (officially) been released on
CD. Much of the Summer Surf album is freakin' awesome - never on
CD. Songs like "Star of David" and "Surfin' Rebel" are prime DD.
And some of those albums are going for astronomical prices today -
Summer Surf LP recently went on eBay for $135 or something! Thank
God I have it on tape. DD is a real pain with the whole "The last
thing I did was my best ever! Everyhing else sucks!" attitude. Well,
if the money is there maybe he'll change his mind eventually.
Surfer's Choice is coming out, isn't it? That'll be cool.

I never heard any of Dick's stuff not released on CD. Most of the
stuff I have heard is off the new albums. Not a big fan of those.
There are a couple good tunes but even the good ones tend to drag and
be repetitive. Good but not great. And I have the greatest hits and A
Run For Life mp3. It rules. And my favorite Dick vocal number is
California Sun.

Jacob, California Sun? Boy oh boy, I really wish people would have
left that one for the Rivs, it's even funnier when surf bands cover it.
You need to hear Dick's vocals like "50 Miles to Go" which is a very
corny white Bo Diddly romp, "the Blonde in the 406" and "My XKE" which
are equally as corny. But, for some damn reason they don't get out of
your head. I had these songs in my head for DAYS! All are from the
Mr. Eliminator album, and I'll tell you what's so GREAT about this.
Wedged inbetween these corny songs is the Victor. These vocal songs
only make those great instrumentals sound that much better.
Yeah, check out "Swingin' and a Surfin'" another vocal that will be
stuck in your head long enough to make you want to blow your brains
out. Now that's quality!

I love Dick's version of California Sun. It gets stuck in my head.
Peppermint man is terrible though.

WHAAAATT!? Mr. Peppermint Man is great! The background vocals, Dick's
tone. You prefer Dick's "California Sun" circa 1994 to Mr. Peppermint
Man? Don't tell me you like SRV/Dick Dale Pipleline.

I can tolerate "Peppermint Man," and to a lesser extent, "Swingin' and a
Surfin." "Jessie Pearl" isn't bad at all once you get past the lyrics.
What he does to "Summertime Blues" and "What'd I Say" on the Ciro's album,
though, is unspeakable (to say nothing of the Dylan cover).

Umm... Greatest Dick Dale song ever.
I only kid about that.

I saw DD live the first time over 10 years ago. I thought it was a
good show then and I enjoyed the music for what it was but it did not
stop me in my tracks.
Last October I attended the SC Lobster Festival featuring DD as a
performer. I had no idea he was going to be playing. I was sitting
there attacking my crustacean when all of a sudden a shrieking guitar
came out of nowhere. I dropped the crustacean and said, "Hey, is that
Dick Dale?"
I got a little closer to the stage and began really listening to the
music and I was like, "Wow! who are his back up musicians? They
rock!!" I did not remember DD sounding quite that good last time. They
really got my attention.
When I got home that evening I researched DD's current band and
discovered Sam, Dusty and Slacktone. I was familiar with Agent Orange
so it began to make sense to me. DD had managed to find 2 excellent
musicians, each with a unique and powereful stage presence to back him
up. It made such a difference. Anything that can distract my attention
from a Maine lobster has to be pretty damn good. It is too bad Dusty
has decided not to continue to tour with him.
I have seen Slacktone live several times this year and I am more
impressed than ever. Sam and Dusty with Dave on guitar is definitely
an experience! Maybe not as ominous as DD but equally as legendary.

But don't you think that Slacktone would be the first to agree that if there was
no Dick Dale then there would not be a Slacktone?
