Is there any software that makes writing Tab easier? Do most people do
it manually?

Being a computer geek/programmer with the text editor VI (actually VIM)
burned into my nervous system, I just do it manually.
Glad to see you over here Ferenc. Not only have I bought tons of cool CD's
from Ferenc at his Pop Records Mart, but he plays guitar with Pollo Del Mar
and the Mach IV.

Oh, Hi, I should have introduced myself, but now Brian has done it for me...
I consider myself to be a student of the surf guitar. While I also teach
surf to a few students, I love to learn surf tunes, both trad and
modern. I have written out tabs to a few of my songs which I will post
shortly. Every once in a while I tab out someone elses music, but I dont
know if I will post those. I recently did a tab for "The Bells of St.
Kahuna" by Slacktone, and sent it to Dave Wronski to look over, and he
re--wrote it using his technique, so now I wouldn't feel right about
posting my version.

i have some free download for tabbing on my computer. got it of the net but
i dont have clue where, downloaded it over a year ago. works pretty
straightforward, not a lot of options but quite enough. i'm sure you could
find it it somewhere on the net, but if you can't i could try to e-mail it
to you or something. i dont know anything about computers so i'm not sure it
would work, but i could try. the programm cant be to big.
it had one funny feature. as a tempo/feel indication it automaticlly said,
instead of 'moderate ' or the boring 'play jazzy with a light feel' : "PLAY
VERY LOUD AND WITHOUT FEELING WHATSOEVER" or something like that.
i never use it though. i only figure out song i'm going to play and try to
memorize them. i fool myself into believing i remember everything, but
obviously i just don't remember what i forgot. the occasional time i do tab,
i do it by hand. yes, with paper and a pencil. and a ruler. i know, it's
lame, sorry.

I created a page of blank tab on the computer and saved that away. Most of
the time when I am learning a song I just print that sheet out and write on
it with a pen. If it turns out, I scan the results and file it away on the
computer. Its faster than typing it all in.

Hi Ferenc,
Would Dave wronski object to having tabs of his songs on the net? how could
i reach him anyway? I recently did tabs of his version of The Wedge en Tiki
Bar Crawl from the live in Prague cd. I think the wedge is pretty accurate,
not to sure about tike bar crawl! I'd like to have him have a look at it.

Since I am truly lazy, yet end up tabbing out nearly every tune I
write or figure out, I'll give a handy hint. As a tuba player and
jazz guitarist, I often had need for lined music paper much like
something tab would be found on, so I took the idea a step further.
Go to any local music store and pick up a book or pad of music
manuscript paper: it's pre-lined and everything. I always keep a few
loose sheets in my case, in addition to a spiral-bound notebook of
manuscript paper that houses all Lava Rats tunes. That way any time
inspiration strikes all I have to do is pull out a clean sheet and a
pencil, and I'm good to go. Also, it's a good way to keep charts
organized as a band's repertoire grows.
Generally, you can get like 100 sheets for somewhere around 4 bucks
or so in a notebook. It makes tabbing easy, and you don't have to go
nuts drawing all those lines just to get an idea or two down.

Yeah,
All you have to do is get out a ruler and add another line to the 5
line manuscript paper, and it becomes tab paper (unless you're Keith
Richards, and use a 5 string guitar...no extra line needed).

I have seen (and bought) books of blank tab paper (6 lines).
Better yet, grab this file:
And print out as many copies as you want.
I print it out with MS-Word using a non-proportional font (courier 12 or
something).

There are at least two pieces of TAB writing freeware available for
download: 1)Instab and 2) Powertab. Instab is usefull, but Powertab is
phenomenal. If you use the GOOGLE search engine and type in Powertab (in the
search field), you'll find several sites at which you can download this tool
and many more sites at which you can download TAB files writen for Powertab.

Here is one that runs on Netscape so you can run it from any machine
even, gasp, non-Microsoft ones.
As other people have mentioned, I also end up writing them by hand.
This works better (less hardware to deal with and MUCH more flexible),
except when you want to share it with others of course.
