Guyatone "Flip Series" Reverb 3000 - A better Fender Reverb Box?

Gavin Ehringer (windanseabeachboy) - 09 Apr 2005 18:59:33

Guyatone has a reverb box that is all-tube and looks to be a worthy contender
for the title of heavyweight reverb champion del mundo. It sells for about $450,
roughly
$50 bucks more than street price of the Fender '63 Reverb Reissue, but has
several
features that seem worth the extra dough: namely, it comes with NOS 6K6, 5751
(12AX7),
and 12AT7 tubes, and it has five pots to control tone, instead of the three pots
on the
Fender reverbs. Pots are: bass, treble, level (mix), master volume, and reverb
(dwell).
I have now owned two Fender reissue tanks, and both seemed too trebly to me. I
am seriously thinking of trying one of these Guyatones, but I hate to be the
guinea
pig. I will make the sacrifice, if need be, but wonder if anyone on the list has
one of
these boxes and wants to venture their opinion.

do you have a place where we can look at the schematics? wonder if
it's a copy of the fender schematic.
fwiw - that remark about the correct tubes don't mean j.s., you can
score nos 6k6's on ebay for next to nothing, and even my Tilburg,
netherlands local electronics store carries JAN GE 5751's. converting
to a 2 or 3 band eq should be fairly easy too.
what would be a big improvement is an eq on both clean AND reverb
signal.
My current belief is that, next to tubes, the reverb tray itself is
the biggest factor in deciding the sound, and as has been discussed
before, differences in those are just part of the deal.
anyway. if it is ptp and delivers surf reverb, it sure looks like a
better bang for the buck then the RI fender unit.
but why for the love of god does it look like Marshall???????????????

I would not know where to find the schematics; likely, it is the Fender circuit,
but can't
confirm. I only pointed out the tubes because most of us replace the original
Fender
Reverb Reissue power tube with a NOS 6K6, which is an expense. Add to that the
extra
controls, and again, it might justify the cost.
What I want to know is, how does it sound? BTW, they use the same accutronics
tank as
Fender uses for its unit. I am confident it is NOT point-to-point wired at that
price.
Yes, the Marshall look is most unfortunate. ;-)
