Slacktone Live CD reviewed in new Guitar Player mag

ipongrac - 08 Apr 2005 13:49:28

The reviewer is RAVING about Dave Wronski! Rightly so, too, I think
most of us would agree. I think it's Darin Fox, and he says something
like "Wronski pushes the development of surf guitar more than any
other guitarist since Dick Dale." I don't have the review here now,
or I'd include it in this message. The only bummer is that it gives no
props to Dusty and Sam, but it is a guitar magazine, so I guess that's
OK.
Anyway, congratulations Dave!!

What month is the issue? May? It is good to see surf getting some
recognition. Did you get a thing put into Guitar Player? Or was it
guitar world?

Yes, I think it's the May issue. I just got it yesterday, it
probably won't be on the newsstands for another week or two.
I was able to get two things into Guitar Player: they had one part
of the Space Cossacks track "The Apes of Wrath" in the Reader's
Challenge column, and then the following month they had a brief
review of "Tsar Wars". I was thrilled, believe me! I think those
were in the April and May 2002 or 2003 issues, I can't remember
now.
Guitar Player had a lot of stuff on surf music during the nineties,
even a cover story on the nineties surf scene! I don't think Guitar
World ever did much on surf music - they love their metal way too
much for that.

I believe Guitar Player put out a compilation on surf as well. Guitar
World is terrible. I have bought a couple issues because The Beatles
and the Who were on the covers. The actual story on the bands were two
pages. Really crappy.

I just today got my April issue (Hendrix on the cover), and it's all
beat to hell too....hopefully I will see this new issue w/Slacktone
very soon.
I've been listening to the new Slacktone live disc, and had a few more
thoughts. Not only are the Slacktone originals just flat out killer
(PCH, Daytona Mona, Skateboard Command, etc, etc), but I love what
they do with Penetration and Surf Party. They really made them their
own songs. You can recognize them as Penetration and Surf Party, but
they have so many "Wronski'isms" added to them, it is a total joy to
listen to. I think that is the mark of a truly great band, to take a
cover and rework it into their own song. And, I also really dig how
you can hear someone (I think it must be Dave) just shouting and
yelling as they are playing along, having the time of their life.
That's one thing I always loved about those 60's surf instrumentals,
you could often hear these crazy kids just yelling and screaming as
they are playing along...so much damn enthusiasm for what they are
doing, it is so infectious.

I have that issue!!! It contained a round table discussion of surf
guitarists. I should go dig it out, because at the time I got that
issue I didn't know much about the scene. I do remember Dick Dale and
Jim Thomas (Mermen) being in it...but I can't remember who else right
now. This was the first time I had ever seen an interview with Dick,
and I remember thinking "how odd this guy talks about himself in the
third person".... ha-ha.

Rosarito 3-Day is killer on the Live in Berlin disc. Best song they
have ever played. It isn't my favorite song of theirs but they played
it so well.

Yeah, Guitar Player and Vintage Guitar are the only guitar rags worth the time
o'day, for electric guitar players anyway. All the others focus on metal. Look
for the May issue with Joe Perry on the cover. That's the one with the Slacktone
review on page 102.
The most interesting thing I find about the review is the last line where the
reviewer sez, "Trust me folks, Wronski is as bad as they come". I was happy to
see that in light of the fact that most kids today don't consider a guitar
player hot (bad) unless their playing over-distorted speed metal. I'm quite the
opposite. Once I hear distortion, I think the guitar player is cheating. This
is not to say that I haven't had my hair blown by some excellent distortion
players, but distortion is a bit of a crutch and I'm more impressed if someone
plays head turning licks without it, as our Dave Wronski does so well.
