Hey all,
I've found a guitar of interest on Ebay, but I'm very suspect of it.
Looks nice, but there are just a few things that don't jive, so I need to
bounce it by someone who might be certain....Here is the link:
Now then, here are my question:
The seller is claiming its an original '66 Jaguar
-In black? Was that ever an optional custom color?
-Rectangular mother-of-pearl fret inlays in the 60's??? I thought that was a
70's thing.
-Black pot knobs? Like the kind in the picture? in '66?
-No "Jaguar" on the headstock decal? Would Fender have done such a thing?
-no mention of replacement foam on mute?
I don't know...can anyone dispute this? Great looking guitar but the
year "66" and the details just don't jive.

I am not 100% posive about the color, nevertheless the
finsh appears so pretty and shiny that its at least
as good as a Fender paintjob.
But the other stuff you were uncertain about are all
66. rectangular inlays arrived in 66. The neck binding
in 65. My 65 Jag has got a much darker rosewood for
the fretboard, it might be a change from brazilian to
indian rosewood when CBS took over and all the pre-CBS
parts were used up.

Hi Dano,
From lurking about on the Fender Forum, I think I can answer some of these.
You may want to try asking Jim Shine (he subscribes to this list but never
posts). You can also reach him on the Fender Forum in the Jaguar &
Jazzmaster forum.

Yes.

No it started after CBS took over....66 sounds right.

The Jaguar lead pot knobs were always black, but they had indentations in
the sides of them for gripping. Its hard to tell but the ones in the photos
look smooth.

Yes. Black guitars were somewhat rare, and Fender didn't want to make
special gold decals for each line. So they ended up just saying "Fender" on
them and were used on all black guitars.

It may still be original, but probably is fossilized. At least it still has
the mute!

It looks good to me...very clean. The only detail is the knobs. I can't
quite tell if they are right or not.
