Does anybody here who plays Squad Car live do a siren noise? And if so
how do you do it. We have added it to our set and I wish to have the
siren sound for full effect.
I liked how Outer Wave did it. They actually played it on the guitar.

What are you talking about jake, during the beginning, I thought I was
just going to go up to the mic and do it vocally:)

But that isn't how Eddie and the Showmen do it. Plus, people join surf
bands because they cannot sing and play at the same time. And that
includes not being able to do a siren nosie and play at the same time.

I've seen the Cocktail Preachers do it via guitar.
But I think you should go the full trad route and play it like the
original. Get yourself a saxophone mouth piece, complete with reed,
and blow through that. It's just the mouth piece mind you, not the
rest of the sax-a-ma-phone. :-)

It is kind of pricey but this would do the job....
(you might find one cheaper, I just did a quick ebay search for "crank
siren") for added effect have a bikini girl do the cranking!
A friend of mine got a Surf/Siren/Wah at the flea market. It did the
siren well but everything else was useless. He sold it on ebay for a
tidy profit.

I did that - I spent a couple of bucks on a cheap mouth piece and a
few reeds. It's hard to do. I practice at it, but I'm still not
able to do it consistantly every time. You have to cup your hands
around the mouthpiece, and use them to manipulate the sound. I
watched Eddie and the Showmen do it on the surf Reunion, and used
that as guide. It's really loud, and it gives me a head rush to
blow that hard. Sax-a-ma-phones is hard!
Chris
Exactly, Chris...
I heard it was originally done "Kazoo style" with a
saxophone/reed/mouthpice through an old microphone...
Squad Car rocks...

Chas Stewart of the Belairs originated the sax
mouthpiece and reed siren as I recall, and that was
carried forward to Eddie and the Showmen when Eddie
Bertrand left the Belairs. When Paul Johnson
re-recorded "Squad Car" in 1980 with the Packards, a
local cop was called in, and he agreed to sound his
siren for them to record. I suppose a sample would be
an easy solution.
John Kohlman (Shockwaves rhythm guitarist) was the
first one I know of to do it on guitar. Instead of a
slide, he simulated the Euro siren two-note warble on
guitar in lieu of the usual siren sound around 1988.
It was a brilliant move on his part, and very
effective, and the fans seemed to like it a lot.

We have a siren on CD which we usually ask to be played through the house system
if available. We ask the sound man to queue it. If no house system, we usually
run it through a spare channel of the guitar amp and queue it ourselves, a bit
trickier though!

Really? I watched a tape of it, and I thought it was a sax mouthpiece
(after all, the sax guy was playing it). But there was never any
closeups so I couldn't tell for sure. I used to play the trumpet as a
kid, and I don't think you can get that kind of sound of a trumpet
mouthpiece. You can do cool Donald Duck type voice stuff though.

We force Ted Thompson to do the siren sound using his vocal chords for us
(Detonators), when we play Squad Car live. We even trained the boy to do
different types of sirens from different cities.
He still won't let me duct tape a beacon light to his head...............

I stand corrected. You are most likely right if'n it was the sax guy playing it.

In the Daytonas we used to do the siren sound vocally with every band
member screaming totally uncoordinated... At one time the other
guitarist built a device using parts from a kids electric box but it
came out sounding too lame.
Klas / The Surfites
That was Chas Stewart, and it was his sax mouthpiece.

Or were you watching the Eddie and the Showman
segment?
Then it would be Bob Knight's sax mouthpiece.
