Deke's Guitar Geek DVD- Venturesmania!

Chris (kahunatikiman) - 05 Apr 2005 22:18:34

Has anyone seen the Deke Dickerson guitar geek 2004 dvd with the
Venturesmania tribute? It is super cool!
If this has been discussed before, sorry.
Deke, Garrett from the Ghastly Ones, Pete Curry from Los Straits,
and Sugarballs Sprague recreate the Ventures Live in Japan almost to a
tee! They use orig. 60's sidejack Mosrite Ventures guitars, and an old
Mosrite bass, and 3 Fender showman amps. Its only 5 songs I think,
but really cool, and they sound great! Too bad it's so short.
I'm tunin' the Mosrite amd warmin' up the Showman right now.....
* It's official - I hate Deke Dickerson for his perfect playing and
showmanship......

Sounds cool! I saw some pictures on the Ghastly Ones site awhile
back, looked like a lot of fun.
I agree with you about Deke! Today, he makes some of his early
Untamed Youth stuff, which I still think is still EXCELLENT, look
sloppy, and he does stuff back then I will never ba able to.
He's coming to Chicago saturday night, as a side note, I'm currently
playing in a band with Deke's bassist Jimmy Sutton. So, hopefully
I'll get to speak with Deke, make an ass of myself, and be a dork
and offer him a copy of our album.

A little story about Deke...I've known him about 20 years when The
Shockwaves [my first band, a surf band from San Jose] used to to do a fair
amount of gigs with Untamed Youth and The Phantom Surfers, or sometimes with
The Mummies. Deke was always the nicest guy. Time passes, I stay in surf and
Deke gets into roots rock, and I don't see him for at least 10 years. About
2 years ago he's playing in my town, and I go to see Deke Dickerson and The
Eccofonics. I'm standing outside waiting to get in, Deke walks up, and we
say "hello" just like it was yesterday. No egos at all. Deke is absolutely
the nicest guy to know.
Yeah, and one of the best guitarists and showman you'll ever see.
Get the dvd, it's great. I'm looking forward to the 2005 one, I hope he
releases it too!!

Similar to Stretch, my story occurred just a few weeks back in early
March at the Blue Jean bop festival in Fremont.
I'm there with Tube Sharks guitarist, Tom Knezevich, and we walk up to
Deke to compliment him on a great show. He's got a beer in hand
surveying the neo-roots rock scenesters and custom cars. He goes, "Hey,
guys!" like it hasn't been a week since we've seen him last (and in
fact, it may have been a year). But the fact is, once you meet him,
he'll remember you, even vaguely.
Deke is one of the humblest, famous people you'll ever know. Great
voice, showmanship and he has the talent of a technically proficient
player that would make Merle Travis, Joe Maphis and Speedy West take
note. Always creates well-produced material. He's a historian who has
also created his own history. He has played with many and knows many in
the underground scenes. He will be in Green Bay/Oneida for a few days,
he mentioned. He hangs out on and some
others.
Surf guitarists should check out what the roots rockers and country
pickers are doing for additional style, influence and aptitude.

Also from what I saw at this show, Deke is now doing a combination
surf/rockabilly-styled version of BumbleBee Twist. Actually pretty cool
and gets the sideburn-swingers to their feet.

Yep - Deke's surf covers really get the crowd going! I saw him
twice last year. both times it was Roots/Rockabilly type guys and
gals at the show. he tore it up with Bumblebee Twist, Diamond Head,
and Penetration. The crowd loved 'em! He plays those songs so
flawlessly, it looks easy. He has a confidence about him when he
plays that makes ME want to play those same songs, 'cause the look
like so much fun!

One (well, technically two) more little side-note on the Deke
thread....
I couldn't agree more with the "once you met him, he recognizes ya -
I talked with him briefly after he played a set at a 4th of July BBQ
Hot Rod Bowl-O-Rama at Sea Bowl in beautiful Pacifica, CA. I was
trying to score a copy of Major Chaos, but minutes before he'd sold
the last one. Some 8 months later I saw him at Slim's in SF with Los
Straitjackets, and when I said hi to him after the show, he asked if
I'd had a chance to track down a copy. Needless to say I was floored.
On the flip side, an acquaintance of mine apparently had beef with
the Dekester at one show in SF, and was at that same show at Slim's.
From what I hear, this guy began running his mouth yet again while
Deke was trying to sound-check. Deke almost immediately jumped down
from the stage, grabbed this somewhat inebriated fella by the back of
his collar, and personally removed him from the venue. Rock-star
jerk? I think not!!! Hell, I don't care that I knew the guy... even
I would have tossed him for talkin' smack to the Dekemeister!

Anyone seen the cool studio live performances the Untamed Youth did on
the "It's Happening!" TV show were Deke starts a wrestling fight with
host Domenic Priore and all the go-go girls! Lots of fun!

Yea I'll second all this talk about Deke. We opened for him a couple
years ago At a local bar. Durring his set he thanked us for opening
and then ripped into a surf medoly. My jaw dropped.I had to go home
and practice at three in the morning that night. Miller
